possible? He had to get them away from her.
âBack to work,â he ordered them. âIâm startingat the head of the street. You two come from the other end. Weâll cover more ground.â
Once theyâd reluctantly traced away, with lingering looks that almost got them killed, Murdoch descended to the street, then strode toward her.
What the hell was she doing out here alone? There could be more of the Icere out in this city. To risk her safety like this . . .
Without warning, a memory arose. âI donât understand why men get so jealous over possessions, or over their women,â heâd once told his father.
His father had seemed deeply disappointed when heâd answered, âSon, thatâs because youâve never cared about anything enough to fight for itâor to fear losing it.â

âOh, no, no. This isnât happening,â Danii muttered as she jogged backward three steps, then whirled around in the opposite direction from the vampire intently approaching her.
Itâs him! Earlier when sheâd reached the Quarter, sheâd asked around for Nïx, but instead had found out that Forbearers, led by a very big and handsome vamp, were going door to door, canvassing the streets for someone.
Sheâd joked to herself that maybe it was Murdoch out seeking herâlaugh, laughâto abjectly apologize. Had she been not far off the mark?
Or maybe he still wanted to throw her down and drink her.
âWait, Daniela!â
When he traced in front of her, she halted with her palm raised to her lips. âCome any closer, and Iâll fill your lungs with ice.â
âI donât want to hurt you.â
âNo? You were going to bite me earlier.â
He didnât deny it, just gave a curt nod.
âSo whatâs different now?â
âIâve replenished the blood Iâve lost. And Iâm not surrounded by the scent of yours.â
âSounds like youâre trying to make your loss of control my fault.â
âNo, it was solely mine.â
âIf not to bite me, then what do you want?â
He didnât seem to know how to answer that. At length, he said, âJust to talk to you.â
âIs that why you and your henchmen were looking for me?â Predictably, heâd need to see his Bride.
He ran his palm over the back of his neck. âWe . . . werenât . . .â
âYouâre not looking for me.â How embarrassing. âThen who?â
âWe seek Ivo the Cruel.â
A Horde baddie. âGood luck with that,â she said between gritted teeth, turning to leave.
He followed her. âYou know of him?â
âOf course I do. Iâm not the one batting for Team Oblivious like you are.â She snapped her fingers and made a face of realization. âOh, but wait, youâre no longer quite so clueless since you grilled me last night .â Again he didnât deny it. âDid you tell all the Forbearers about what I said when I was delirious?â
âIâve told no one,â he said, his handsome face darkening into a scowl. âWhat in the hell are you doing out here alone?â
âIâm looking for someone myself.â
âWho?â When she didnât answer, he said, âYou should be where itâs safe. There could be more Icere.â
Like he cared. She picked up her pace, refusing to spare him a glanceâand failing. He seemed to be puzzling over what to say to her.
Finally he decided on: âYou gave me the wrong number.â
He called? Her immediate high promptly nosedived. Of course, heâd only called for help with Ivo. âYou have a lot of nerve bringing that up.â
âWhy would you do that?â
âForâfun.â To get your hopes up and then have them dashed. Like mine continue to be.
She reminded herself that any âhopesâ she might have had about
