him were firmly in the tense that was past. âAnd for the record, I wasnât seeking to wed you, vampireââ I might have been right after we came together ââand I wasnât even looking for an exclusive relationship.â Unless heâd been interested in one. With that, she stormed off.
He was right behind her. âWhere are you going? Why wonât you give me two seconds of your time?â
I donât think my battered ego can take it. Like her body, it hadnât quite recovered.
âYouâve easily forgotten that I saved your life last night!â
She rounded on him. âWhich wouldnât have needed saving if you wouldâve just shut up and moved on!â
He didnât even seem to be listeningâinstead his gaze raked over her, from her chest to her uncovered navel. âWhat are you wearing?â he grated. âFor someone whose skin is in danger of being burnt, you show enough of it.â
Too late, he was acting like a domineering vampire with a Bride he considered worth having. âBecause otherwise Iâd burn up!â She wished she could criticize his clothing, but he looked irritatingly GQ in his tailored slacks and expensive shirt. His black cashmere jacket fit his broad shoulders to perfection.
Normally, sheâd have been ecstatic to be seen with such a man.
âThen why do you live in this warm city?â he asked.
âBecause this is where my coven is. For now.â
âFor now? Is it moving?â
She narrowed her eyes up at him. âDonât you have someone to be searching for? Iâm sure you need to catch up with all the other little Forbearers.â
He cocked a brow at that. âWeâve split up. You could help me.â
âOh, thatâs rich. The last time I âhelpedâ you, I got nothing but a burned hand and a death threat.â
He closed in on her, forcing her to back up until she met a shop window. Looming over her, his voice a husky rasp, he said, âIs that all you got out of it, kallim ?â
Kallim meant âdarling.â Woo-hoo, a step up from âchit.â âDoes this usually work on women?â Somehow she managed to be cold and unaffected. Or to look it. She hoped. âThe threatening and then the full-court press?â
He exhaled. âI regret how today ended.â
âJust as you predicted, it all went downhill from that one good hour.â Where sheâd made contact with the window, ice crystals fanned out on the glass, outlining her bare shoulder and upper arm with frost.
He noticed and said, âIâm glad youâre, uh, cooling.â Then he bit his lip, looking like he was inwardly kicking himself.
âI see why you were so popular with the ladies, Murdoch Suavé. With lines like that, how could you not be?â
âMurdoch Suavé?â With a shake of his head, he said, âWeâre looking for Ivo because he might be a danger to Myst.â
Ivo could be. If the creep was in town, heâd probably be looking for his former captive.
âIâve been ordered to protect her,â Murdoch added.
âProtect Myst? This is a considerable change fromââshe imitated his low, accented voiceââMyst is Nikolaiâs enemy! We hate Myst! Sheâs mean .â
His lips quirked, which seemed to surprise him, then he resumed his scowl. âThey have come to an . . . understanding.â
âTold you. So what do you need my help for?â
âMy men and I canât get any leads. Iâve tried to question beings from the Loreââ
âBut no one will speak to any of you. The rookies keep striking out?â
His glower deepened at her comment. âFinding Ivo is critical to me, Daniela. My brother would be destroyed if anything happened to Myst. The blooding is making him fall for her.â
âThatâs not what the blooding does, you oaf!â
