him. âYou donât work for my father?â
âNo,â Cole assured her.
âOr anyone who wishes me harm?â
âNo.â
âYouâre with Mira and youâre trying to help me?â
âYes.â
Tessa gave a small smile. âI can tell when people are lying. Youâre not. At least I donât think so. Can I trust myself as an imprint? I feel normal, but I canât feel my power anymore. Not at all.â
âIâm here to help,â Cole said, and he meant it more than ever. Tessa was only two years his junior, but her small build, big eyes, and pretty face made her seem even younger. Anyone would want to protect her!
âFather is looking for me too,â Tessa said. âI have to be careful what I share. Even when people mean well, they could accidentally give away clues.â Tessa looked young, but like Mira, she hadnât aged for more than sixty years. Though still a kid, she had a lot of experience living on the run.
âThe real you is already in trouble,â Cole said. âYouâve probably been caught. Weâre not just trying to find youâweâre trying to rescue you.â
âMother sent a young boy to rescue me?â Tessa asked.
âWe have an adult with us,â Cole explained, trying not to feel inadequate.
âDoes that mean there are other kids?â Tessa wondered.
âWell, yeah, three others,â Cole said. âFour if you count Mira.â
âWho sends kids against soldiers and evil weavers?â
âWeâre what Mira has,â Cole said for want of a better reason. âWe rescued Honor and got her power back. Constance too.â
âYou found Costa?â Surprised joy lit up her expression.
âAnd restored her power,â Cole said. Tessaâs excitement at the news helped him feel less defensive.
âAll right, Iâll talk to you,â Tessa said. âWhere do I begin? Tell Mira Iâve been all right. She always worries. After father took my weaving power, I didnât feel like myself for years. I went around in a daze. You know the feeling when you forget something important you want to say? You just had it in mind, but then you canât remember? I felt like that all the time. Something was missing.â
âThat sounds terrible,â Cole said.
âNot too bad,â Tessa said. âI just felt . . . off. More annoying than terrible. Anyhow, a few years ago, I started feeling more like myself again. I began to get impulses about where to go and what to do. I started saying things that disturbed people.â
âDisturbed people?â
âI used to do it all the time,â Tessa said. âI didnât stop to think about what the words meant. They just showed up. That stopped after father took my power.â
âThen your power started coming back,â Cole said. âIt happened to your sisters too.â
Tessa puckered her lips off to one side. âI donât feel it now. My power, I mean. Being an imprint. But it was coming back. And people were after us.â
âUs?â
âMe and Leo,â she said. âMy bodyguard. He didnât come in here with me. I hope heâs all right.â
âWhyâd you come here?â Cole asked.
Tessa shrugged. âOn a hunch. My hunches saved us a couple of times, so Leo was starting to trust them.â
âWhere were you heading next?â
âThatâs the big question,â Tessa said. âIf you know where I went, youâll run off to save me.â
âIs that so bad?â
âNot bad. I want to be saved. I just wish I could feel what would be best for you. And for Mira. And for me, too. The feelings were coming back to me. As an imprint, I donât have the gift at all.â
âWeâll be careful,â Cole said.
âYouâll try,â Tessa said. âHonor tried too. She had some soldiers with her. If
