blue.
Below the transparent star
floating—like scattered down—
a phantom silver cloud.
“Tarde tranquila, casi”
Tarde tranquila, casi
con placidez de alma,
para ser joven, para haberlo sido
cuando Dios quiso, para
tener algunas alegrías... lejos,
y poder dulcemente recordarlas.
“Tranquil afternoon, almost”
Tranquil afternoon, almost
with placidity of soul,
to be young, to have been so
when God willed it, to
have had some joys... far away,
and to be able tenderly to recall them.
“Yo, como Anacreonte”
Yo, como Anacreonte,
quiero cantar, reír y echar al viento
las sabias amarguras
y los graves consejos,
y quiero, sobre todo, emborracharme,
ya lo sabéis... ¡Grotesco!
Pura fe en el morir, pobre alegría
y macabro danzar antes de tiempo.
“Like Anakreon”
Like Anakreon
I feel like singing, laughing and hurling sour
wisdom and grave counsel
into the wind.
Especially I want to get drunk.
Now you know it. Grotesque!
My full faith in dying, meager joy,
and macabre dancing before time.
“¡Oh tarde luminosa!”
¡Oh tarde luminosa!
El aire está encantado.
La blanca cigüeña
dormita volando,
tranquila y disforme, ¡tan disparatada!,
sobre el campanario.
“O luminous afternoon!”
O luminous afternoon!
The air is under a spell.
The white stork
dozes in flight,
and the swallows crisscross, their sharp wings
spread in the gold wind,
and in the cheerful afternoon they fade far
flying and dreaming...
And one turns like an arrow,
its pointed wings stretched out in the dark air,
seeking her black corner in the tile roof.
The white stork
quiet and deformed,
a pothook scrawled absurdly
over the bell tower!
“Es una tarde cenicienta y mustia”
Es una tarde cenicienta y mustia,
destartalada, como el alma mía;
y es está vieja angustia
que habita mi usual hipocondría.
La causa de esta angustia no consigo
ni vagamente comprender siquiera;
pero recuerdo y. recordando, digo:
—Sí, yo era niño, y tú, mi compañera.
*
“It is an ashen and shabby evening”
It is an ashen and shabby evening
disorderly like my soul,
and again this old anxiety
where my usual hypochondria lives.
The cause of this dejection I can’t begin
even vaguely to figure out,
but I remember, and remembering I say,
“Yes, I was a child and you my companion.”
*
Sorrow, it isn’t true, I know you.
You are the nostalgia for a good life,
the loneliness of the dark heart,
of a boat beyond shipwreck or star.
Like a forgotten dog with no
track or smell, that roams
about the roads, aimless,
like a child on a carnival night,
who gets lost in the crowds,
who as candles flicker in the dusty wind
is aghast, and his heart
blundering with music and pain,
so I go about, a gloomy drunk,
a moonstruck guitarist, a poet
and despondent guy in dreams,
always chasing after God in the haze.
“Y la de morir contigo el mundo mago”
¿Y la de morir contigo el mundo mago
donde guarda el recuerdo
los hálitos más puros de la vida,
la blanca sombra del amor primero,
la voz que fue a tu corazón, la mano
que tú querías
