suggest you calm downââ
âIâll calm down when I know whatâs wrong with Grandpa!â
He studied her a moment as if prudently weighing his answers.
âI didnât think you liked doctors. Weâre quacks, remember? Unethical fools who donât know the difference between a scalpel and a butter knife.â
âYou donât, as far as Iâm concerned. If I had been home, I would have dosed Grandpa with herbs and put him to bed. But I wasnât there, and Datha was, so here we are. I can hardly jerk him off the examining table and take him home, so weâll just pretend I go along with your diagnosis.â
Crossing his arms, he stared at her. âBut you donât. You know more than I do when it comes to the heart.â
âNot more, but probably as much.â
âFortunately, most sane people donât agree with you.â
âAre you saying Iâm not sane?â
âIâm not saying anything.â
âThatâs wise, because most people havenât had the experience I have with the egos of the medical community.â
He stiffened. âMissâ¦?â
âTruitt. April Truitt. Rileyâs granddaughter.â
âI knew Iâd seen you somewhere before.â
Stepping closer, she seethed. âYou know perfectly well who I am. You told Grandpa about me selling the compound with Mrs. Pinkham, and donât deny it. Because of you, I canât sell it anymore!â
His eyes turned glacial. âI donât know where you got that idea, but I havenât said a word to your grandpa about your activities with the Pinkham woman. How could I? I didnât know who you were until five minutes ago!â
April rolled her eyes in disbelief. âOh, really, Dr. Fuller.â
He met her defiant tone and matched it. âYes, really , Miss Truitt. I donât give a fig what you doâgot that?â
âDr. Fuller.â She drew herself upright, facing him. âI may not like it that my grandfather is here, but I trust you to do the best you know howââ
âMeaning you think someone else could do better?â
âMeaning that I want to know whatâs wrong with him.â
âThen what?â
âThen Iâll determine what course of action to take.â
After shooting her an angry glance, he studied his notes. âYour grandfather has a heart problem. Todayâs episode may have been an attack, or it may have just been a warning. In any event, he needs rest. Iâll want to observe him.â
âFor how long?â
âAt least through the afternoon.â
April was against leaving him here, but she supposed she must. If she caused a scene, it would upset Riley more. The extra time would give her the opportunity to consult with Mrs. Pinkham and old Mrs. Blake as to what herbal treatment would be most beneficial for him.
Meeting his eyes, April whispered ominously, âIâll be back for him late this afternoon.â
Grayâs face tightened. âAnd Iâll release him as soon as I feel confident itâs safe.â
Did he actually think he could take that tone with her?
Apparently he did.
He walked off before she could call him back.
Datha was waiting for April when she stepped outside the office. âIs Mr. Ogden all right?â
âHeâll be fine,â she reassured her. âIâm glad you were there to take care of him.â
âI was so scared,â Datha admitted, her shoulders slumping in relief.
âThe doctor wants to observe him for a little while, but heâll be back home by this evening.â
âIâm so glad.â
Â
It was nearing four oâclock when April returned. Gray was standing in the doorway of the examining room, studying the tall vase Francesca had purchased for the waiting room. No matter where he put it, it didnât look right.
When he heard the door open, he turned to greet the new
