took to giggling. The back door opened and in walked Uncle Angus. âLook what I found on the lawn.â He held up Avaâs nighties. âCanât for the life of me figure out what theyâre doinâ in the rose bushes.â
âTheyâre my nighties, Uncle Angus.â
âNighties! They look like hankies.â
âExactly. Thatâs why I threw them away. Fire them in the coal stove.â Aunt Vi grabbed them. âYouâll do no such thing. If you donât want them any more, give them to your sisters or your nieces. Theyâd love them.â
âYouâre right. Sorry, I shouldâve thought of that.â
Uncle Angus went to the sink for a glass of water. âItâs a fine winter day out there. No snow on the roads. I think Iâll take a run up to Sobeyâs. Anything you need at the store, Vi?â
âOh dear, lots of things.â
âWhy donât you go with him, Aunt Vi?â Ava said with her mouth full. âYou probably never get out of this house. Lola and I will hold down the fort for a few hours.â
âOh my, Iâm not sure,â Aunt Vi hesitated. âWhat if your mother wants something? And the nurse is coming by in an hour.â
âIâll get whatever Ma needs and Iâll be here when the nurse comes. Iâd like to talk to her anyway. If it makes you feel better, why donât you take my cell phone and I can call you if something comes up. Thatâs if itâs still working.â
Aunt Vi took off her apron. âOkay then, I donât see why not. Iâll just be a minute, Angus.â
Ava followed her aunt upstairs and picked the cell phone up off the floor. She flipped it open, and lo and behold it was still functional. She gave it to her aunt, but not before slipping three one hundred dollar bills in her hand. âPlease take this. We canât be eating you out of house and home.â
âYou eat like a bird.â
âPlease. Donât make a fuss, just take it.â
Her aunt took it. âThank you, dear. I donât mind tellinâ ya, it comes in handy.â
Vi and Angus left the house, feeling a bit guilty that they had some free time together but enjoying it all the same. Of course they didnât get too far up the first aisle in the grocery store before someone beetled over to talk about Ava.
âIs she as pretty in real life as she is on the screen?â Tootsie Wadden wanted to know.
âSheâs prettier,â Angus said loyally.
âOh my,â Tootsie squealed. âDo you think sheâd mind if I came over to say hello?â
âShe might not, but I do,â Vi said. âMy sister is ill and needs her rest. We donât need the likes of you showinâ up.â
Tootsie stomped off.
Then there was Ethel Snow. âIâm bringing round a mess of cod tongues for your dinner. Will Ava be there?â
âYouâve never brought a mess of anything round to our house, Ethel. I wonder why youâd pick now, eh?â
âBeinâ neighbourly.â
âGo way with ya. I donât have time for you or your tongues.â This time it was Vi who marched off. There was nothing for Angus to do but tip his ball cap. âEthel.â He hurried after his wife.
At the check-out counter, Avaâs picture was on the front of the TV Guide. Angus picked it up. âWe should buy this.â
âSuit yourself.â
The cashier rang it in. âIsnât she your niece?â
Vi nodded proudly. âThat she is.â
âWow. Can you tell her Iâm her biggest fan? Iâve seen like every movie sheâs ever made at least three times.â
âI will, dear. Whatâs your name?â
âItâs Debbie.â
âIâll tell her, Debbie.â
âThank you. Oh, this is so exciting.â
âThis hereâs her money. She gave it to me this morning.â Vi passed over the
