first bitter taste of something near jealousy. He hated it.
Her beautiful clear eyes became shuttered. âHe told me he loved me. He swore it time after time.â
âIt sounds more like he terrorized you.â His voice was grim.
Laura shook her head, not ready to tell anyone outside Sarah, another woman, what she had suffered at Evanâs hands. âI just fell out of love with him.â She took a quick sip of her coffee, swallowed it.
âAre you sure of that?â
âHavenât I come here to escape?â
âObviously he has a powerful hold on you?â
âYes.â No point in lying.
âLaura, Iâm sorry.â
She couldnât fail to recognize his sincerity. âIâm sorry too. But itâs my own fault. I was the easiest target.â She wondered what he would ask next.
âYou know, youâre the one who has to decide you need help. Or do you want to deliver yourself back to him.â
âGod, no!â She couldnât stop the shudder. âWhat an unbearable thought. But he wonât let go.â In fact Iâm certain heâs already begun looking, she thought.
âThat might well be the case with you?â he watched her face. âYou canât let go either.â
âThatâs not right, Evan,â she said, very quietly, her soft lovely features firming with resolve.
âThen help is at hand, Laura. All you have to do is want it.â
âYou have no use for weak people, do you?â She lifted her head.
âI donât regard you as weak. Whatever makes you think that?â
âIâm not a woman of substance.â She fought against sudden tears.
âIâd like to beâIâm going to beâa woman of substance, like Sarah,â she said.
âSarah has had her troubles, Iâm sure. And theyâve lefttheir mark on her. As my bad experiences have left an indelible mark on me. Youâre younger than either of us. One doesnât know everything at twenty or twenty-three. Thatâs no age at all! Oneâs whole life is a process of learning. Obviously someone has gone out of their way to try to crush your spirit. After your father died you must have felt very much alone.â
âI really needed him.â She forced her grip on her coffee cup to relax. âI donât think Iâve felt safe for years. Certainly for a long time now the feeling of safety has eluded me.â
âWhat drew you to your doctor, then?â he asked, using a quiet, soothing voice. âWhy did you fall in love with him?â
She put a hand beneath her satin hair. âHeâs very handsome. Nothing like you.â
âThank you.â His mouth turned down.
âI mean heâs an entirely different type. Golden-haired. Azure blue eyes. Cold, cold, cold. Nowhere near as tall as you, or so powerfully built. Heâs slim. Very elegant, in his way. Heâs terribly interested in clothes. He wears only the best.â
âThese are very superficial things, Laura,â he chided her.
âYou asked. Iâm trying to answer. Heâs clever. Heâs very highly regarded.â
âWhatâs his speciality?â
âIâm not saying. Iâve already told you too much. Heâs very much admired.â
âIt occurs to me you donât admire him.â His deep voice was dry.
âHeâs so clever he can be insufferable,â she burst out, then stopped abruptly. âThatâs all Iâm telling you, Evan.â
âWell, itâs a start.â He continued to study her expressive face.
âI donât buy your cover either,â she countered. âIâm going to steal into your place one dayâ¦â
âTo do what?â He narrowed his eyes at her.
âSearch for clues. You could be an international spy. Are they still around?â
âOf course they are,â he confirmed. âTheyâre all out
