opposite end of the banquette. It was too damned cramped anyway, especially for a man his size. âThere arenât supposed to be secrets in bush towns. Ruth McQueen from all accounts is a ruthless woman. Not liked at all, while Kyall is universally admired. Mrs McQueen is vehemently against Sarah, as I imagine you know. She idolizes her grandson. Sarah and Kyall have just become engaged and the balance of power has shifted. Dictators donât like that.â
âNo,â she replied briefly, her mind never far from Colin. âPerhaps sheâs trying to scare them by vanishing?â Laura tested her idea on him.
âEmotional blackmail, do you mean? She could take that approach,â he said dubiously. âOn the other hand a woman like that must feel sheâs in total control.â
She had experience of the rage when a controller like Colin didnât feel that way. âIt doesnât sound good,â Laura offered sombrely.
âNo.â
âSarah was so very, very happy yesterday. I would hate that to change.â
âSo would I. Sarah deserves to be happy. Itâs time for her to be.â
âIt doesnât sound as though she could be happy living at the McQueen homestead with that very grand lady whoâll do anything to upset her.â
âKyall wonât let that happen. Iâm sure all will be resolved.â
âSadly, lifeâs not always like that.â
âDonât fall into the doldrums. Eat that biscuit,â he said. âYou havenât put on an ounce.â
Her expression lightened. âWhat was it the Duchess of Windsor used to say?â
âOne canât be too rich or too thin,â he answered.
âBeing rich doesnât ensure happiness,â she said.
âNo, it doesnât. The first time I saw you I thought you were a poor little rich girl with a tale to tell.â
âI know.â
âYou do come from a privileged background?â
âYou surely donât want me to apologize for it?â
He shook his head. âOf course not. I was one of the lucky ones myself. But I would like to hear what youâre holding back. Itâs hard to believe a too-demanding boyfriend could cause you such grief.â
Why couldnât she say it? Itâs my husband. Heâs brutal by nature, with darkness in him. âYou donât know what Iâm dealing with, Evan,â was all she could manage at the time.
âTell me.â He caught her fingers briefly, felt their tremble.
âMaybe I donât want you to see me as I am.â It came out so very starkly she herself was shocked.
âIf youâre trying to tell me youâve done bad things in your life, I just donât believe it.â
âNot bad things, no.â God, she hoped not. Was it bad to have allowed Colin to rape her? For that was what it had been. No love. No consent. But she couldnât have stopped him without being knocked senseless.
âIn retrospect I can see how naïve Iâve been. I donât admire myself for it. Iâve accepted people at face value. If they were nice to me I thought they were nice people. But some wear handsome masks to hide their ugly faces. Maybe theyâre really devils, or in the devilâs employ? Thatâs when despair comes.â
The mere thought of her entangled with a âdevilâ chilled his blood. Goodness knew, heâd seen the face of evil in a beautiful woman. âLaura, if youâre in a bad situation you have to get free,â he said, with some passion.
She closed her eyes. âI know that. Iâm working on it. I donât feel alone. But I need a little time.â Why couldnât she simply say, Something horrible happened to me, Evan. A marriage that shamed me. She didnât realize that hers was a classic response from innocent victims of abuse.
âDid you live with this man?â Evan asked bluntly, givingin to his
