too. Janet had told her to watch her figure or risk losing Luke’s attention. In one of Sarah’s few rebellions, she had taken to drinking extra-rich coffee and sneaking sweet desserts she normally would have spurned. Idiot , she thought again. Her captivity was making her insane. If she were to get through this ordeal, she had to stay in the present. Focus on Julia’s tenderness and that moment of connection, not a past life.
Sarah wanted to ask questions, but Julia’s lesson had been very clear. Speak only when spoken to. Sarah waited patiently as Nurse Olson took her blood pressure with an old-fashioned cuff and pump. She was glad for that. The new machines hurt because they squeezed too hard, and they made her hate every visit to the doctor’s office.
Unfortunately, Sarah didn’t realize that more than a few things were old-fashioned in this doctor’s office. When she tilted her head, expecting the nurse to rest a digital thermometer in her ear, she was surprised to see a large glass thermometer. The old kind, with mercury inside. She opened her mouth, thinking of childhood and holding the thermometer under her tongue for minutes at a time, and got her first nasty shock of the visit.
Nurse Olson took off the sanitary plastic wrap and smeared the bulb of the thermometer with a thick, clear goop. Sarah made a face, thinking of how bad the goo would taste. Instead, the nurse patted the examining table. “Face down,” she said cheerfully. “Buttocks up, and spread your cheeks apart.”
Sarah stared in shock, unable to say a word.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Sarah gaped at Nurse Olson in horror. No.
“Move it,” the nurse repeated. “I hear your Nurse had to threaten you with a demerit in the waiting room. Trust me, young lady, once you get a demerit you will do anything humanly possible to prevent getting another one. I’ll make allowances because this is your first visit, but don’t push. You don’t want a bad report to take home to your Nurse. That’ll make any paddling I give you seem like a cakewalk.”
Sarah glanced at the door, and Nurse Olson took a step toward her. “Please,” Sarah whimpered, hating her promise to at least try to obey. Had Julia known what would happen? She’d said Sarah would probably do something naughty because things were new, but she hadn’t warned her about this embarrassment. Then she thought of two other concerns — one, her diaper. Second, the butt plug.
All things considered, Sarah decided it was in her best interest to obey and not give this stern nurse any reasons to inflict punishment. If the nurse at the check-in desk was any indication, Nurse Olson would probably delight in tormenting her about the diaper. Sarah tried to unfasten the pins under the gown, but Nurse Olson shook her head.
“You’re new, but even you should know not to touch yourself without permission. The only part you should be touching is your cheeks so I can take your temperature.”
Because it was impossible to explain, Sarah stepped onto the platform and crawled onto the table. As she turned and tried to bare her bottom, the nurse chuckled.
“Ah,” she said. “That’s why we’re so obstinate today, is it? My, you must have been a naughty thing if your Nurse had to diaper you right off the bat. Turn over, and we’ll get that off you in no time.”
Inexplicably , Sarah was reluctant to lose her only protection. Hateful or not, at least the diaper prevented worse things from happening to her. Still, an order was an order. She rolled onto her back and lay expectantly on the table. In no time, Nurse Olson had clicked the pins open and slid the cloth off, giving a spank when Sarah tried to cover up. “No false modesty here,” she scolded. “We’ll be seeing every inch of you by the time we’re done, and no spoiled chit will interfere with our work.”
Sarah complied, blinking hard and staring at the far corner. She willed herself not to respond to the provocation. The evil wretch
