private case, or can he just take on any job he chooses?â Bob paused and took a long breath. âMe and Ray will be in Richmond tomorrow, on police business. Any chance we could meet up? We have a favour to ask Jonah, a
big
favour. But I think weâll need to explain in person.â

âAnd you have no idea what this is about?â asked Jonah.
It was lunchtime the next day, Never having met with Jonah around the corner from the cafe where theyâd arranged to meet the detectives. âI just know they want a reviver,â Never said, shrugging.âBob approached me first to see if it was even possible, and to make sure youâd not be offended.â A thought struck him and he smiled. âItâs like Iâm your pimp.â
Bob Crenner and Ray Johnson were already there when they entered; in a secluded corner, burger and fries in front of Bob, a salad in front of Ray. âWhatâll it be, gentlemen?â asked Bob. âLunch is on me.â
They both went for the burger option. Bob caught the eye of the waitress and ordered himself a triple espresso as well. âI live on coffee,â said Bob. âKeeps me going. Three years back, my wife started to worry I was drinking too much caffeine so she got decaf for home. Didnât tell me. I spent a week falling asleep in the office every morning before she confessed.â
Jonah turned to Ray Johnson. It was a year and a half since Jonah had first met him, on what had only been Rayâs second revival as a detective. âGood to see you, Ray,â said Jonah. âSo how many revivals have you attended now?â
âNot that many. Iâd say maybe an even dozen.â
âEighteen,â said Bob, with a certainty that put a wry smile on Rayâs face.
âEighteen,â said Ray. âTime flies, huh? How about you?â
Jonah smiled. âI donât keep count.â Even so, he wondered how many it had been. Daniel Harker had been his last official revival before the Reese-Farthing fire, when his injuries had put him out of action for four months. He guessed at forty or so revivals since then. If heâd still been going at the rate heâd averaged before Reese-Farthing, it would have been well over a hundred by now.
Bob looked at him. âSo howâs your health?â Both Bob and Ray had sent messages of support to Jonah while he was in hospital.
âAs good as it could be, I think. Still hurts sometimes.â
âI hear getting shot does that,â said Bob. âI donât ever intend to find out myself.â
âAnybody ever shot
at
you, Bob?â said Never. âRay, maybe?â
Ray laughed. âIâve been tempted.â
They caught up a little and swapped tales, Never grossing Bob out with Stacyâs lung effluent experience from the previous day. When they finally got to the story of David Leithâs revival, the mood darkened.
âYes,â said Bob. âItâs not just you thatâs been having trouble with the Afterlifers.â He avoided eye contact and shifted his position in his seat. âIâm sorry. Iâve been stalling. You know how it is. I feel bad putting you in this position, but I have to ask. And donât think you have to say yes. Iâll understand.â
Here it comes
, thought Jonah. Because whatever Bob wanted from him, it surely boiled down to a very simple question.
Jonah caught Neverâs eye, then asked it: âWho, Bob?â he said. âWho do you want me to revive?â

âTwo weeks ago,â said Bob, âthe body of a woman called Mary Connart was discovered in an alley in the north east of DC. Me and Ray were on the scene within fifteen minutes. Her injuries were â¦â He shared a look with Ray, who shook his head grimly. âUnusual. We requested a revival, but we had some trouble. The same trouble you had with the teenage boy.â
