to go to the police. Thatâll cause more trouble than itâs worth, and thereâs no saying we would get out of it. We made the choice to go to the warehouse, and that puts us at fault. So no police. Not now.
âWhat makes this all about the party is that the party is what got us here. The idea of the party. The fun. The freedom. Weâre in this situation because we wanted to get there, and if we donât get there, if we donât party , then what is any of this for? So weâre going to the party, no matter what.â
âAnd what about the drugs?â Brandon asked after a pause.
âWeâre taking the suitcase to Balducciâs.â
âAnd then taking the money back to the warehouse?â Emily asked to confirm.
âNope.â
Both Emily and Brandon gaped.
âLook, our original plan was to throw the cocaine in a river,or a pond, or flush it down the toilet after, I donât know, a thousand flushes. But then we donât get anything, and we possibly get caught because of the amount of time it would take.â
âBut what about taking the money back to the warehouse?â Brandon asked.
Ana shook her head. âBad idea. We could only do that if we were sure weâd make it back before the real Liz and Chestnut made it there in the first place, and we canât be sure about that. And while we could hope theyâd be understanding and let us go because the job got done, we canât be sure of that, either. So the only thing we can be sure of is that we can get the drugs to the restaurant, and then get out without anyone knowing who we are or where we came from. Then weâre in the wind, and richer for it.â
Brandon nodded. âMaybe even thirty grand richer. Each.â
Emily whirled around and looked at him. âYou think thereâs ninety thousand dollars â worth of cocaine in there?â
Brandon shrugged. âSure. Itâs heavy as hell.â
â Dios mio , how would you know that?â Ana asked.
âYou know, CSI ,â Brandon said. â Law & Order .â
âAy!â Ana shouted. âThatâs not helpful. You have no idea how much is in there. But it doesnât even matter. Theyâll know how much to give us.â
âWhat if they rip us off?â
âDo we care? Whatever they give us is more than we had before.â
âI still donât feel great about this,â Emily said. Thoughsheâd set this whole thing in motion, and though she wanted to break out of her shell and do something crazy for once, the adrenaline was starting to run out and her usual careful self was starting to return.
âHereâs an option,â Ana said. âWe can Robin Hood it.â
âHuh?â Brandon leaned forward. âGive the cocaine to the poor? I mean, Iâll admit that they might know what to do with it better than we do, but I donât know if promoting drug use is really the way to go, Ana.â
âNo,â Emily said, shaking her head. âSheâs talking about the money.â
Ana grinned. â Exactamente . The money.â
âWe can take the money we make from the cocaine and give it to charity,â Emily said. âWe could do it anonymously. Thatâll make the whole thing better. Sort of.â
Brandon shrugged. âI guess thatâs not a terrible idea,â he said. âBut whatâs to guarantee that Big Dog wonât hunt us down and kill us?â
âThereâs no guarantee that Anaâs not going to kill us on this road,â Emily said, watching as the street and other cars sped by. âBesides, Iâm not really sure heâll be able to track us down. And at least this way, if we give it to charity, this whole thing wouldnât have been a waste. Weâll be doing good.â
âKinda,â Brandon said.
Ana whooped. âFor charity!â
Brandon nodded and looked at Ana. âNice thinking,
