the evening arguing.â
âWell, then, we wonât argue,â he said cheerfully, picking up her coat. âYou have to eat, so you might as well go with me and have a scrumptious dinner at Claireâs and we can talk about any subject you want.â
âThatâs just putting off the inevitable.â
âIt wonât hurt to put it off until after dinner.â He held her black coat out for her to slip into, and they stared at each other over it.
âYou look beautiful,â he said, his voice lowering a notch. She seemed exasperated by his compliment and thrust her arm into her sleeve. He slipped the coat onto her shoulders and lifted her hair out of the way, brushing her nape slowly with his fingers.
âStop flirting, Aaron,â she said darkly.
âImpossible when Iâm with you,â he whispered at her ear and then brushed a light kiss across her cheek.
Turning to slant an angry look over her shoulder at him, she clamped her lips together. He could almost see her refusal to go out surfacing, so he took her arm and spoke quickly as he steered her to the door. âI told my brother Jeb about you. He has a second-grader, my little nephew Robby. Heâs having trouble with his reading. Can I tell my sister-in-law she can call you and talk to you about Robby?â
âOf course.â
âThey have Robby in a private school, and theyâve had a tutor, but something isnât working right.â
âHave they had him tested for dyslexia? Iâm sure they have,â she answered her own question swiftly. âI canât imagine with all the individual attention, he doesnât get the help he needs.â
Aaron held open the door, locking it behind them and looking around as they stepped outside. He didnât want Pamela to know he was carrying a gun now. If he gave chase to anyone again, he was going to be able to stop a car from getting away. And he worried about Pamelaâs safety.
He didnât see anyone lurking in the shadows, but once they were on Main Street, he spotted a tail again. Picking up his phone, he called Dakota to inform him of the black car and learned that Dakota already knew about it. As soon as he broke the connection, Pamela spoke.
âYouâre being followed again. Aaron, what are you involved in that someone would follow you? Youâre halfway around the world from Spain.â
âI donât think Iâm the one whoâs being followed.â
âNot me! Youâre so wrong there.â
âThose two investigators from Asterland were persistent intheir questions and were with you for over an hour, werenât they?â
âYes. You think theyâre following me?â She twisted around in the seat to glance out the back.
âThe investigators seem a likely possibility. If youâre trying to see them, the men following are two cars behind us.â
Turning to face him again, she settled in the seat. âIâm sure youâre the one theyâre interested in. Thereâs no reason to follow me.â
He reached Claireâs and turned into the lot for valet parking, climbing out of the car and glancing at the street, but he couldnât spot the tail and he wondered if they had turned off before the restaurant.
The maitre dâ greeted Aaron and led them to a table near a quiet corner of the restaurant.
âNow I know why you arenât drinking any wine.â
Reflected candlelight flickered in the depths of her luminous blue eyes that were so large, he felt enveloped in blue. âIt wouldnât be good for the baby,â she said quietly.
He nodded and looked up as the waiter stopped at their table. âGood evening, Miss Miles, Mr. Black,â he said. âWould you like to see our wine list? Tonight we have a special French red wine.â
âIâll take a glass of the red wine, and the lady will have water,â Aaron replied. As soon as they
