donât know a damn thing but Iâm going to find out. This has to stop!â
âWellââMarket rubbed his chinââCourtney knows, Rick Shaw and Officer Cooper, and Clai and Diana of the Rescue Squad, of course. Train people know, including the passengers. Train stopped. A lot of people know.â
âYes, yes.â Her voice trailed off.
âWhat are you thinking?â
âThat I wish so many people didnât know already. Controlling the information might have been a way to snag a clue.â
âYeah.â The phone rang inside. âIâve got to pick that up. Letâs stick together, Harry.â
âYou bet.â
Market opened the door and Pewter scooted in, calling her goodbyes over her shoulder.
A miserable Harry unlocked the door to the post office, Mrs. Murphy and Tucker behind.
âCome on.â
Mrs. Murphy looked at Tucker.
âYou thinking what Iâm thinking?â
Tucker replied,
âYes, but we donât know where.â
âDamn!â
Mrs. Murphy fluffed her tail in fury and walked dramatically into the post office.
Tucker followed as Harry picked up the phone and started dialing.
âIt could be miles and miles from here.â
âI know!â
Mrs. Murphy crabbed.
âAnd weâll lose the scentâif itâs there.â
âIt held a little bit the other time. That day was stinky hot too.â
Mrs. Murphy leaned up against the corgi.
âI hope so. Buddy-bud, weâre going to have to use our powers to get to the bottom of this. Harryâs smart but her nose is bad. Her ears arenât too good either. People canât move very fast. Weâve got to find out whoâs doing this so we can protect her.â
âIâll die before I let anyone hurt Harry!â
Tucker barked loudly.
âSusan, thereâs been another murder.â
âIâll be right there,â Susan replied.
She started to dial Fair at the clinic but hung up the phone. It was a knee-jerk reaction to call him.
âRick Shaw came by for Ned,â Susan said as Harry unlocked the front door. It was 7:30 A . M .
âWhatâs he want with Ned?â
âHe wants him to organize a Citizenâs Alert group. Harry, this is unbelievable. This is Crozet, Virginia, for Peteâs sake, not New York City.â
âUnbelievable or not, itâs happening. Did Rick say anything about Maude?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, was she alive when she was run over?â Harryâs entire body twitched at the thought and a wave of nausea engulfed her.
âI thought of that too. I asked him. He said they didnât know but they believed not. The coroner would know exactly when she died.â
âIf Rick said that, it means she was dead already. I mean, youâd have to be pretty stupid not to tell after a certain point. Did he say anything else?â
âOnly that it happened out near the Greenwood tunnel, out on that first part of track.â
Harry said, almost to herself, âWhat was she doing out that far?â
âGod only knows.â Susan sniffed. âWhat if thisâthis creature starts after our children?â
âThatâs not going to happen. Iâm sure of it.â
âHow would you know?â A note of anger crept into Susanâs voice.
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to ignore your concern for the children, and you should keep the kids in at night. Itâs just thatâwell, I donât know. A feeling.â
âThereâs a madman loose! Tell me what Kelly Craycroft and Maude Bly Modena had in common! Tell me that!â
âIf we can figure that out, we might catch the killer.â Command rang through Harryâs voice. She was a born leader, although she never acknowledged it and even avoided groups.
Susan knew Harry had made up her mind. âYou arenât trained in this sort of
