happiness.
âThis isnât your day to play wallflower, lad,â Andrew said as he approached.
âJust taking a breather,â Jeffrey replied, his eyes resting upon Katya. âAnd enjoying the view.â
âIâve never had much respect for a man whoâs not able to outmarry himself,â Andrew said. âGlad to see youâre upholding my estimation of you, lad.â
Jeffrey watched as Katya spoke and laughed and positively shimmered. âIâm a lucky guy.â
âYouâre a ruddy sight more than that. Youâve the good fortune of twenty men, lad. Congratulations.â
Jeffrey caught sight of himself in an ancient mercury mirror. Smugness fought for place with wonder across his features. âI canât thank you enough for the carââ
âDonât give it another thought.â Andrew paused, said, âAs a matter of fact, Iâve got a news of my own. Care for a glass of something wet?â
âNo thanks. What news?â
âMy wife and Iâve decided to adopt a little one,â Andrew said, then, when Jeffrey laughed, âWhatâs so funny?â
âYou and your British calm. Youâd announce the start of World War III without raising your voice.â
âHaving a wee one dribble on your best suit is a trial, Iâll admit, but not quite as bad as that.â Andrew grinned. âLife was bent on sparing us the bother, but my wife and I were never ones to rest on good sense when we were wanting something. Especially when it comes to kids.â
Jeffrey offered his hand. âCongratulations, Andrew. Iâm sure youâre going to be a great dad.â
âWish I shared your confidence, lad. The thought is enough to give me a bad case of the shakes, Iâll admit.â His grip on Jeffreyâs hand lingered. âIâd thought of asking you to be his godfather.â
âMe?â
âDonât look so shocked. Youâve got all the right ingredients for a godparent, far as I can see. And in years to come, youâll be able to give the little blighter the kind of gifts he deserves, like a matching suite of Louis XIV furniture.â Andrew sobered momentarily. âSeriously, lad. Iâd be ever so glad if youâd accept.â
âIâm honored, Andrew. Really.â
âThatâs settled, then.â Andrew dropped his hand. âYouâd be amazed the things you and the little wife will get involved with when your own time comes. Never knew wallpaper coloring was a national priority.â He motioned to where Magda waved at him. âYouâre being summoned, lad. Time to rejoin the fray.â
Magda patted the chair next to her as he approached and said, âAllow me the honor of sitting next to the most handsome man in the room for a moment.â
âI am only a complement for your daughterâs beauty,â Jeffrey replied, sitting down.
âFor this moment, perhaps.â Magda searched out her daughter, responded to her wave with yet another smile. âYes, it is indeed her day.â
âYou have raised a beautiful daughter,â Jeffrey told her.
Magda turned her attention back to him. âAnd granted her the good sense to choose an excellent man.â
âThank you, Mrs. Nichols.â
âI was so pleased that my daughter was not artistically inclined.â She sipped from her glass. âI did not wish the Lord to burden her with this passion.â
Jeffrey found her across the crowded room. âShe has your passion,â he replied. âIt comes out in other ways.â
âI am glad.â Magda inspected his face, asked, âYou are worried by this trip to the Ukraine?â
He nodded, no longer surprised by her changes in direction or choices of topic. âDoes it show so clearly?â
âNo, but I know my daughter. She will have bestowed her own worries upon you. Her life and her heritage has been
