a tornado. I couldnât miss it.â
âThe love of Witches generally doesnât last long,â Syd said. âNow Phil knows where he can go when the Witch fades.â
âI do indeed,â I said. Already I could see a future with Molly. âMeanwhile, I have to solve this murder.â
âI know. Bear was a great guy. My roommate Queue knew him too.â
âRoommate?â
âI needed a place to stay, and she had room. Weres look out for Weres.â
âShe knew Bear? I never heard of her.â
âShe told me she met him about six months ago in Otoâs dojo. They worked out together. They were casual friends. That was all there was to it. He wasnât one to make moves on girls.â
I sighed. âI had better check Queue, just to be sure. Can you ask her to come see me?â
âYou can check her now. Sheâs waiting for me in her car.â
That was how she had gotten here so quickly. âOkay. Bring her in.â
Queue turned out to be a tall, buxom, black-haired black-eyed woman, pretty and self-possessed. Her midnight tresses contrasted with Mollyâs curly brown hair, being luxuriously waist length.
We shook hands. âIâm Phil Were, investigating a murder.â
âQueue Were. Molly said I might be a suspect.â
âItâs a technical thing. We are checking out all of Bearâs closer acquaintances.â
âWe werenât close. Oh, I suppose we could have been, as he was a good man, but he was locked in.â She glanced briefly at Syd, signaling that she knew the lock.
âI need to see you Change.â
âThe hell! Iâm not exposing my body to a stranger.â
âItâs that my secondary is to read a person when he invokes his Name. I can tell guilt or innocence. You could start your Change in clothing, and reverse it soon.â
âI reversed mine,â Molly said.
Queue surveyed me speculatively. âLike a lie detector. You tune in on the Name because thatâs the very essence of a personâs magic.â
âSomething like that,â I agreed.
âIâve got reason to keep my clothing on. Iâm unusual. Iâm a WereMan.â
I thought I had misheard. âA what?â
âA WereMan. I Change into a man, complete with genitalia. It can freak folk out.â
âIâm a WereWoman!â I said.
âYouâre like me! Only reversed.â
âYes.â
âTell me: when you Change, are you male or female inside?â
âIâm a man in a womanâs body. So I donât do it often; itâs not comfortable.â
âAnd Iâm a woman in a manâs body. Same situation. I donât sexually hunger for women in either form.â
I nodded, understanding perfectly.
âSheâs a better match for you than I am,â Molly said sadly.
âYou assume I want him,â Queue said. âIâm not looking for romance with anyone. Not since my boyfriend dumped me three months ago.â
âYouâre still hurting,â Syd said wisely.
âYes. These things take time.â
âNow about the verification,â I said.
âAh, yes. That. Iâll make you this deal: Iâll strip and Change if you do too. So if itâs awkward, weâll both be similarly embarrassed. Is that a fair compromise?â
Was she really a WereMan? I wanted to verify that too. In fact I was overwhelmingly curious about this aspect, so similar to my own. âDeal,â I agreed.
The two of us faced each other and stripped, while Syd and Molly sat watching. Queue was a luscious creature, generous in breast and buttock. I did start to get an erection, but quickly progressed with my Change so that there was nothing to erect. Meanwhile she shifted, her breasts flattening into chest and upper arm muscle, her bottom condensing, her groin growing a fair sized phallus. She was definitely a man in form.
