he finished. âBasically, hurry up and get it done, and signed by somebody named Tell in Selkirk, Arizona.â
âDo you know this Tell fella?â Taylor asked.
âNever heard of him.â
âWhy is he lettinâ you know where to find him?â Ransom asked.
âThatâs obvious,â Clint said. âHe wants me to find him. Iâll know why when I do.â
âAnd thatâs where you were headinâ when we stopped you?â Taylor asked.
âThatâs right.â
âIâm really sorry, Clint,â Taylor said. âI had no ideaââ
âThatâs okay,â Clint said. âWeâre going to be done here in two daysâ time at most.â
Taylor and Ransom looked at each other. Clint knew what they were thinking, that he was assuming heâd come out of the confrontation alive.
âIâm always looking ahead,â he told them. âYou canât ever assume youâre not going to survive.â
âI suppose youâre right,â Taylor said.
âYou know,â Ransom said, âNed might have more than twelve men with him. We could be outnumbered more than two to one.â
âWeâll cross that bridge when we come to it,â Clint said. âAll we can do is get the men we do have ready. Andy, you were going to get us some lookouts.â
âFirst thing tomorrow Iâll line âem up,â the lawman promised.
âUm, youâre not going to get any boys who are related to Pine, are you?â
âDonât worry about that,â Taylor said. âWeâve pretty much gone through all his relatives.â
âThatâs good.â
âExcept for the women,â Ransom said.
Clint looked alarmed. âWeâre not going to have to deal with any of the women, are we?â
âProbably not,â Taylor said.
âUnless they pick up guns,â Ransom said.
âJesus...â
âWhat do you want to do with the two men from tonight?â Taylor said.
âBury them,â Clint said. âIâll pay for it.â
âYou must have a lot of money,â Ransom said, âpayinâ Kale and Delaney, and now payinâ to bury these two.â
âYou know,â Clint said, âeven if I did have a lot of moneyâwhich I donâtâI probably wouldnât after leaving this town.â
âIâll talk to the undertaker,â Taylor said.
âIâm gonna have a drink somewhere and turn in,â Ransom said. He looked at Clint. âIf you donât mind, Iâll do it aloneâjust in case somebody else wants to take a shot at you. I had enough excitement for one night.â
âOnce again, thanks for the help,â Clint said. âI might be dead if it wasnât for you.â
âWe all still might be dead,â Ransom said. âSome of us ainât as confident as you areâbut youâre welcome.â
THIRTY-THREE
The next morning Clint met with Ransom, Kale, and Delaney in front of the small saloon. Sheriff Taylor came minutes later with two boys in tow who looked to be fourteen or fifteen.
âWhat are these boys here for?â Kale asked.
âTheyâre going to be our lookouts,â Clint said. He looked at Taylor. âDo we have two good rooftops to put them on?â
âTwo two-story buildings at the north end of town,â Taylor said.
âWhat about the south end?â
âThey wonât be cominâ from the south,â the lawman said.
âWho says?â asked Clint.
âWell . . .â
âI donât think we need two lookouts at the same end of town. Do you, Sheriff?â
âI guess not. Okay, so one at the north end and one at the south.â Taylor looked at the boys. âYou fellas work out who goes where.â
âDo we get guns?â one of them asked.
âWhatâs your name?â Clint asked.
âIâm
