She
may have been woolgathering and fantasizing about her husband, but she wasn’t
stupid enough to leave the building unprotected.
She pulled out her cellphone and called Jerrold, “Get to the
council chamber now please,” and then hung up without waiting for an answer.
She sighed and took a deep breath. It wasn’t Jerrold’s
fault. She shouldn’t have snapped at him. Then she activated the wards in the
council chamber, which woke up the other eight councilors. She hoped they
weren’t too upset, it was almost midnight.
They all came down but calmed down as soon as they saw her
relaxed. When they all arrived and Jerrold made it up she explained as
patiently as possible.
“This human tried to assassinate me with a sniper rifle. I’m
guessing one of the eight families put him up to it. Circle with me, I want
you all to see the evidence in his mind first hand.”
Tina nodded, “Better to find out now before someone tries to
cover this up by killing him.”
They all circled and joined power with her as the head. The
amount of power was almost addicting, but she was well trained, and put the
false feeling of invulnerability to the side, and cast the spell to search the
human’s mind.
Tina hissed, “Gary Johnson.”
The rest of the room rumbled in agreement. Gary was the
head of the family, and was the owner of the large house his extended family
lived at in north west Chicago. They were weak, but there were at least ten
mages living there, and the house was warded as well.
“Jerrold, round up two squads will you? I’m going with
you,” she turned to the council, “Anyone want to go with me? I have a feeling
they’ll all fight when we try and arrest Gary for treason, I’d like another to…
witness.”
She was afraid if it came down to killing them all, there
would be an uproar about abuse. Another witness on the council to verify
things wouldn’t hurt. She just hoped she could take them alive, she didn’t
need a family of martyrs right now. Ruling the mages was hard enough as it
was.
Tina smiled, “Sure, to be honest I kind of miss the field.
So I’ll be your witness, if I can help?”
Tina had risen far, she was powerful and just last week had
been a team lead for the security mages. when the dust settled from the
challenges she’d skipped right past agent of the council and had earned a place
on the council itself.
It was the proof that she’d been right, many good mages made
similar rises, and all in this room. Even Jerrold rose up to senior agent, if
not the council itself.
Jerrold nodded, “We’ll be assembled downstairs in ten
minutes.”
“Excellent, I’ll meet you down there, and have someone mind
wipe this human, and put him outside a homeless shelter. Also, have them pick
up the sniper rifle on the building across the street.”
She sighed, as she took the stairs back to her room. She
figured this would take hours, and that she wouldn’t be able to see her husband
tonight. There were worse things she supposed, last night the sex was
incredibly hot, because they’d missed each other for days. There were
definitely worse things than letting the anticipation build a bit more again.
Still, a part of her wished they could live together, but
she didn’t for a moment regret what they did have. She loved him, and even
wanted more children though the current one still had a long way to go before
she would be born. It was more than enough to make her happy. Once she got
the eight families to back off, she might be able to visit often, and spend
most of her nights there.
She took off her sexy ensemble that had been designed to
incite Shawn’s lust, and put on a pair of jeans, and a dark blouse instead.
Truth be told, she kind of missed the field as well, although being head of the
council could be rewarding too, there was a lot of boredom involved between the
exciting moments.
When she got downstairs, two more of the council had
