wasnât . . . ever first. She was popular enough, but never first. She looked a little sideways at Ivy and wondered what Ivy had been back where she was from. Somehow, she just couldnât imagine Ivy on a cheerleading team.
âYou donât understand the real problem here,â Grace said. She was now getting very carefully to her feet. âIt isnât being thrown off the show or not. Who gives a flying damn? Itâs whatâs going to happen next. I wonder which one of you is going to put this up on YouTube.â
âWhy would any of us put this up on YouTube?â Coraline said. âAnd how would we manage it?â
âCell phone video,â Shari said.
âAnd if one of you donât do it,â Grace said, âthen one of the crew here will. There are cameras everywhere, havenât you noticed? Theyâre filming us all the time. One way or the other, this thing is going tobe on the Internet by the end of the day, and itâs going to be everywhere, and I mean everywhere, by the end of the week. Courtesy of my father.â
âYour father is going to show a tape of this everywhere in the world?â Mary-Louise Verdt sounded confused.
âNo, you rank idiot,â Grace said. âMy father being who he is means other people are going to show this to the world. It doesnât matter if Iâm going to be sent home right this minute or not. Iâm going to be made a complete and utter idiot. Which was the point.â
âYou know, Iâve thought that, too, sometimes,â Coraline said. âThat itâs all done on purpose. You know, to make more drama.â
âOh, for Godâs sake,â Grace said. âOf course itâs all done on purpose. I mean, itâs Sheila Dunham weâre talking about here. Itâs not like sheâs Tyra Banks. The world doesnât worship the ground she walks on. She wouldnât have any career at all anymore if she didnât behave like a complete asshole in public and on unpredictable occasions. Itâs what she does. No wonder that silly little blond girl tried to murder her.â
âOh, do we know thatâs what it was about?â Coraline asked. âEmily, I mean. Was Emily a contestant on the show? I thought Iâd seen all the shows and I donât remember her.â
âBut she looked familiar, didnât she?â Mary-Louise said. âI remember thinking that when I saw her. She looks very familiar.â
âMaybe she was on the show for just a little while and then she got booted off, and she was wearing makeup, you know, or clothes, different things,â Coraline said. âIâll admit I donât always remember the girls who go home first. I mean, theyâre not on very long andââ
âOh, for Godâs sake,â Grace said again. She was standing all the way now, but still leaning against the wall for support. Janice thought that that bruise on her thigh was going to be nasty. âWould you people please wake up? This is a game she plays, and youâre all getting suckered into it. All of you. Iâll bet you anything that Emily didnât try to murder her at all. Iâll bet you itâs a setup. Thatâs what theyâre saying on the news.â
âWeâre not supposed to watch the news,â Coraline said.
âOh, for Godâs sake,â Grace said.
Then she stomped off toward her own bedroom, limping but obviously furious.
Janice watched her disappear through her bedroom door and then another girl, Suzanne Toretti, disappear after her. Suzanne looked scared to death.
Janice turned to Ivy. Ivy was looking at her fingernails.
âI didnât realize it would be so tense,â Janice said. âI guess I didnât really think about what it would be like at all. I just thought it would be something to do. Something that wasnât just staying in South Dakota. If you know what I
