âWhat?â
âTry this on for size.â Mattie lifted her chin and then lost her nerve.
âIâm waiting.â
âI like you. What do you think about that?â
âWell . . .â Garret looked at her for a moment as if no one had ever said that to him.
âCat got your tongue?â
âI never did understand that phrase. Do cats really get oneâs tongue?â
Mattie laughed. âI hope not, but if they did it would prevent speaking.â
âTrue enough.â
âI do like you.â Mattie thought about all the crazy stories sheâd read about him and wondered how many of them were fabricated or not even remotely true. âHas anybody ever said that to you before?â
âOf course, but in truth I havenât been all that likable, Iâm afraid.â
âWell, you are, so there.â
âHas anyone ever told you youâre pretty?â he countered.
âNo,â Mattie said because she thought she could tell this man, this so-called celebrity, anything. âI mean, my parents and granny, but they donât count.â
âFirst of all, they do count. But no boy has ever said that to you?â
âNope.â
âWell, then, they are all . . .â He lifted one hand as if searching for the right word.
âDumb asses?â
âYes, as opposed to the very cool Jamule.â
Mattie leaned against the butter-soft leather and looked over at Garret. âSo, are we gonna do this?â
âMake each other over?â
Mattie nodded. âYou make me into a hot chick and I turn you into an English redneck hybrid that will drive the local girls wild?â
âYes, a new breed of . . . something never seen before around these parts. I like it.â He gave her a nod. âAll right, then. Iâm in if youâre in.â
Mattie pushed up from the sofa and went over to shake his hand. âDeal.â She gave him a firm handshake the way her daddy taught her.
âSo, when do the joint classes begin?â
âI think the sooner the better, donât you agree?â
âAbsolutely.â Garret nodded. âI think the first thingwe need to do is shop. I need boots and you need heels. Itâs always best to look the part.â
âAgreed.â
âYou have a passport, right?â
âA . . . passport?â Mattie felt her eyes widen. âUm, yes, I went on a cruise to the Bahamas with my parents last year and I had to get a passport. Why?â
âYou never know. We might want to pay my mum a visit sometime.â Garret grinned. âAs you said sheâs a famous fashion model, so we might just want to get her input.â
âYou mean . . . go to
London
, and I donât mean London, Kentucky? Youâre joking, right?â
âThereâs a London, Kentucky?â
âYes, and a Paris too.â While her parents had taken family vacations, theyâd visited places like Daytona Beach and Disney World. Other than the cruise to the Bahamas, sheâd never been out of the country. Sheâd dreamed of visiting Europe but never thought it could really happen. In fact, she found the thought exciting but also intimidating.
âI did mean London, England. Donât look so stunned, love. It was only an offhand suggestion for a possible future excursion. We could Skype or something instead.â
âI guess that hopping on a plane and heading to London is normal for you.â She pointed to her chest. âFor me? Not so much. Wait, not at all.â
âSome might say that thereâs nothing normal about me.â Garret chuckled but then shrugged. âI havenât made the effort to visit my mum enough lately,â he said with a bit of a sad tone. âI need to change that.â
âI know what you mean. I miss my parents too.â
âI put my poor mum through hell with
