children.â
âShe did have an interview with Hudson Hills Prep School, and they were going to take her until she handed them her reading list.â
Gabby tried to hide her pride.
âI know youâre smiling about it, but they didnât think it was funny when she read passages from Why Should White Boys Have All the Fun , Forced into Glory and the Souls of Black Folks during her demonstration class.â
âShe said the kids liked it.â
Bunny pursed her lips. âYou encouraged her.â
âShe speaks her mind, Mother, and she always has. I canât stop that.â
âThen why doesnât she work in one of the suburban schools on Long Island or in Westchester?â
âWeâve been around this before, Mother. Itâs her life.â
Bunny dipped her scone into the tea. âFine, I guess her mind is made up.â She nibbled her scone. âHowâs Ian doing?â
âHeâs good. He and Emily have been splitting their time between his condo in the city and a place in the Hamptons this summer.â
âNow Emily Scofield, thereâs a girl from a good family.â
Here we go again. Gabby tried not to roll her eyes. âIan isnât with her because of her family. Sheâs a lovely girl.â
âYes, she is nice.â She sipped her tea again. âYou know who I just ran into at the country club?â
Here it comes. Gabby braced herself. âWho?â
âTerrence Talbot. He was there meeting a client for golf.â
âThatâs nice.â
âHeâs single.â
âTerrence is a nice man and all but no thanks, Mother.â
âSo heâs divorced. Youâre divorced, too.â
âIâve been divorced once. Terrence, on the other hand, has as many ex-wives as there are days in the week.â
âDear, youâre forty-six years old. You canât be too picky.â
âNo, Mother, thatâs exactly why I can be picky. Iâm too old to put up with just anything, no matter how great the pedigree is.â
âFine. Contrary to popular belief, I hadnât planned a wedding.â
âThank you, Mother. Can we change the subject?â
âCertainly. How is Aliciaâs little show doing?â
Gabby nodded her head. âItâs not a little show, Mother. Aliciaâs show is nationally syndicated and she has a successful magazine to boot. Iâd say sheâs doing very well.â
âThatâs nice,â she said almost dismissively. âHow about Lauren?â
âSheâs good.â
âIs she still married to that ex-football player?â
âTheyâre getting divorced.â
âOh, Iâm sorry to hear that. Isnât this her third marriage?â
âYes,â Gabby said reluctantly.
âSo I guess being divorced more than once isnât all bad.â
âNo, Mother, for some people it isnât. Lauren is a romantic, thatâs all.â
âThen why canât Terrance be a romantic?â
âBecause a man whoâs been married six times has something to prove.â
âHmm,â Bunny sighed. âHowâs the gallery doing?â
Gabby was relieved sheâd changed the subject. âItâs doing really well. Thereâs a lot of excitement building for the Sixteen to Watch new artist exhibit.â
âI thought you only showcased fifteen artists.â
âI decided to change it up this year.â
âI see. Is that why youâre going to dinner tonight?â
Gabbyâs heart jumped. âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre having dinner with a patron, so I assume itâs to raise more money to open more slots.â
âRight.â
Bunny checked her watch. âItâs nearly two-thirty and you need time to get ready. Would you mind calling Lee and telling him to bring the car around, please?â
âNot at all, Mother.â
