different name and carrying himself all confident, no one batted an eye.
I step onto the porch and peer through the saloon window. A bodyâs standing right âgainst it, blocking any view I mightta had. For a moment I consider dropping my groceries and plowing inside anyway, pistol blazing. But Iâm worried âbout hitting innocent folks in the process, and besides, you canât gun down seven men unprovoked and walk away whistling. Assuming I can even make that many perfect shots, Iâll still need Silver nearby so I can run when itâs over.
I turn my pace brisk and head for my horse. Soon as she comes into view, I swear. My saddleâs missing, swiped right off her back, and Iâd bet all the gold left in Paâs pouch who took it.
I charge into the parlor.
Jesseâs still at the barâWill now drinking âlongside himâand he donât even look up as I march over.
âWhere is it?â I says.
Jesse strikes a match and lights a new smoke. Then he exhales slow and runs his thumb âlong the rim of his whiskey glass like he ainât even heard me.
âJesse, whereâs my damn saddle?â
âWhy, you going somewhere?â His words are clipped, and I canât tell if itâs on account of the smoke wedged between his teeth or how much heâs drank.
âJesse, I ainât kidding. I want my saddle back.â
âAnd I want in.â
âWhat?â I says.
Jesse straightens and squares to me so fast, I know for certain he ainât drunk.
âWill and meâs been talking. Weâll help you track down Rose ifân we can have a share of whatâs waiting in those mountains.â
âOh, weâre in agreement now?â Will cuts in. Heâs playing with a poker chip, letting it dance over his knuckles. ââCus I recall arguing it werenât the smartest of plans.â
âIâm sick of scraping by every day,â Jesse says to him, âwondering if weâre gonna have enough for Sarah to eat or the means to get a doctor for Jake next time he falls ill, leaving âem alone and unprotected every time we need to take a job running cattle. We do this and weâll be set for life.â
âIt donât got nothing to do with the fact that yer gonna find gold when Pa never could? Yer gonna save the family where he failed?â
âDamn it, Will!â Jesse snaps, his hand curling into a fist.
âWhat, you gonna hit me for saying the truth?â Will shouts. âGo on and do it, then, Mister I Let Go of the Past. Do it!â
âHey!â I shout as Jesse lunges at him. He pauses, lets his fist drop to his side. I ainât never wanted the Coltons on my tail, but suddenly they donât seem such a hindrance. Roseâs gang is seven men strong, and two extra guns on my side certainly ainât gonna hurt things. We can all benefit, and this is a way to tip the odds in my favor.
âI ainât got no need for the gold,â I says, âso ifân yer serious, we got a deal.â
âDeal,â Jesse echoes.
We shake on it. Will frowns.
âRose is in town right now,â I continue, âready to play a few hands of cards at the Tiger. I reckon we can end everything tonight, and if we do, Iâll hand over the journal and you boys can carry on yer way.â
âHang on,â Jesse says. âRose is in Phoenix?â
âI saw his men. The law ainât round and it sounded like theyâre fixing to enjoy themselves a few hours.â
âSo what are you aiming to doâbarge into the Tiger and shoot Rose?â
âNot quite so recklessly, but yeah,â I says. âWalk in, sit at a distance, watch and wait till I got a shot. This is a lucky break, catching up with him here. We got him in a room with four walls âstead of in a mountain range. He canât dodge us.â
âAnd we canât dodge him, neither. His
