said.
Tim shrugged. âAnyway, if I lose, I still get plenty of paper time. Itâs win-win.â
âWin-win-winners!â chirped Katie, appearing out of nowhere, like a pimple on date night.
She plopped down on my lap, stealing a tater tot.
âOh, these need way more salt.â She grabbed a shaker and unleashed a blizzard on my tray. âHi, you guys!â
âHi, Katie!â Heather said.
âHey, Katie!â Brooke said.
âHey there,â Tim said.
âThatâs too much salt,â I said.
But nobody heard me.
Brooke slapped a hand on the table. âKatie, I neverfound the balloon with the ribbon in it! Do you realize what I went through? How many people I had to push down?â
âBrooke!â Heather gave her a shocked look, and Brooke blushed.
âIt was only one person.â
âNot better,â said Heather.
Katie laughed and grabbed Brookeâs hands. âIf it means that much to you, I have another pair of tickets with your name all over them.â
Brooke squealed and leaned across the table to hug Katie, dragging her over my salad.
âHey, leave my lunch out of this!â I poked Katie in the side, and she jumped up, laughing.
âSorry, Vanny.â She brushed a piece of lettuce off the front of her sweater. âI actually came by to tell you that I was talking to James . . . uh . . . Principal Winslow,â she corrected herself, âand he said theyâve already received a ton of ballots in the office from todayâs advice-off.â
Tim perked up. âAm I winning?â
Katie shrugged. âHe wouldnât give me the details, but from what other kids are telling me, youâre going to win.â
Tim smirked and crossed his arms behind his head. âHa! I mean . . . not that I was sweatinâ it or anything.â
âWe know,â I said, lowering the arm closest to me again. âYou already showed us your armpits.â
Tim laughed nervously and avoided Katieâs eye. âWhaaat? That was stretching.â
But Katie was too busy looking at her watch. âOMG, Iâve gotta go! I promised Iâd do a guest lecture in Home Economics.â
âLecture?â I repeated. âOn what?â
âFashion, of course!â Katie tweaked my nose with her fingers. I kind of wanted to tweak hers with my fist.
âWow!â said Heather. âThatâs really amazing. Youâre like a kid genius.â
âOh, stop!â Katie giggled. âIâm just talking about what I know.â
Brooke raised an eyebrow. âV, I think youâre going to have some fierce competition tomorrow.â
âThatâs right! You better bring your A game, sister,â said Katie, touching me for the hundredth time. âWell, Iâd love to keep basking in the gorgeous glow coming from this table, but I must be off to spread wisdom. Au revoir! â
âHuh?â Brooke said as Katie pranced away.
âIt means âgood-byeâ in French,â I said.
âHow do you know that?â
âItâs a long story,â I said. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Heather smile.
In Journalism, the topic on everyoneâs mind? The advice-off. After Mrs. H addressed issues with the issue, we talked about the morningâs event. People congratulated Brooke and Tim, weighing the odds of each win (nobody thought either of them would lose). Then the attention turned to me and Heather. Before anyone could start placing bets, I raised my hand.
âCould we please talk about something other than the advice-off? We still have a paper to put out, donât we?â
Mrs. H smiled. âVanessa does have a point. Letâs get some ideas going for our next issue. Mary Patrick?â
Mary Patrick nodded and uncapped her marker with a loud pop, pen poised at the board.
âFront page?â she called over her shoulder. âWhat are you working on for this
