smile. âThanks, man. See you around.â
Elliott stood there silently and watched them leave.
After a long while Kyle seemed to shake himself back to attention. âSatisfied?â he yelled back over his shoulder.
âAbout what?â
âElliott.â
âHe could have gotten there ahead of us, couldnât he?â Darcy yelled back.
She felt him shrug, but he didnât answer, so she buried her head against his back. Through his T-shirt she could feel the hard flow of his muscles as he guided the motorcycle through town, and suddenly she didnât care where they were goingâshe didnât want to care about anything âshe just nestled tighter against him as the misty night flowed over her, lulling her into a safe, easy calm.
Without warning the bike stopped, and Darcy lifted her head to peer over Kyleâs shoulder. Ahead of her she could see a girl walking alone down the street, and it took her a minute to realize it was Liz. As Kyle pulled up alongside, his sister cast him a ferocious glare.
âWhatâs going on?â Kyle asked. âWhereâs Brandon?â
âGet out of here!â Liz yelled. âLeave me alone!â
âCome on, Liz.â Kyle kept up with her while Darcy looked on apprehensively. âYou shouldnât be out here aloneâwhereâs Brandon?â
âHow should I know! We had a fight in his car, and the jerk let me off in the middle of nowhere! Iâve been walking for miles!â
âLizâwill you just stopââ
âHeâs probably hoping the Vampire gets me!â Liz seethed. âAnd wouldnât that make him happy if I got my throat cutâwouldnât that make him happy if I diedââ
âCome on, donât talk like thatââ Kyle reached out one arm, but she slapped it away.
âJust because I hit him!â she said furiously. âWell, he deserved it! I told him I wanted flowers, so we had a fight, and he insulted meââ
âWhere is he now?â
âHow should I know! Who cares? He had it coming!â
âI doubt that.â Kyle sighed. âYouâre lucky he didnât decide to drop you ten miles from here.â
Liz flew at him so fast that Darcy didnât see her coming. It was all Kyle could manage to keep the motorcycle upright.
âCut it out, Liz, youâre going to hurt someone!â Kyle yelled at her. âI ought to leave you here!â
âI want you to!â Liz yelled back at him. âI want you to leave me here so youâll feel guilty about it all night! â
Kyle glanced back at Darcy, shaking his head with a tolerant smile. âOkay, Liz, Iâm goingââ
âFine! Just go!â
To Darcyâs concern, Kyle sped off. For several more blocks they didnât speak, but as he turned onto a side street, she recognized the Farmerâs Market. It didnât take long to find Brandon. As Kyle and Darcy approached a row of deserted stands, they saw him lying back on one of the wooden tables.
âWho won?â Kyle asked, deadpan, and Brandon looked up, raising a bottle in greeting.
Kyle squinted and laughed. âAre you drinking?â
âJust this awful grape stuff.â Brandon sighed. âI couldnât handle anything stronger right nowânot with this lump on my head.â
Kyle stepped closer and whistled. âWowâthatâs a beauty.â
âI ended up clear in the backseat,â Brandon said, almost admiringly. âWhereâd she learn to punch like that?â
Kyle shrugged and sat beside him. âSheâs pretty mad.â
âNo kidding. Iâm probably deformed.â
âYouâll live.â Kyle took the bottle and helped himself to a sip. âHereâs to women ⦠and their charms.â
âWell, hi, Darcy.â Brandon noticed her at last. âSo glad you could join us.â
