sank. Kyle stopped the bike, and Elliott came out, wiping his hands on a dirty rag.
âHey, man,â Kyle greeted him. âHowâs it going?â
âOkay,â Elliott mumbled. He was staring at Darcy, but she ducked her head and pretended to examine the helmet sheâd taken off.
âHow come?â Elliott said.
âHow come what?â Kyle returned pleasantly.
âYouâre here.â
âJust showing Darcy around town.â Kyle slid off and unscrewed the gas cap. âRealized I needed to feed this thing. Figured Iâd stop and say hi.â
The other boy nodded and turned toward Kyle, his thin hands working slowly ⦠steadily ⦠into the dirty rag they were holding. There was a long streak of grease down one of his cheeks, and sweat glistened on his high, wide forehead.
âI didnât leave that light on,â he said to Darcy, and she glanced up in surprise.
âI didnât come here about that, Elliott.â She shook her head. âForget about it.â
âYou shouldnât be here,â Elliott said, and Darcy jumped as he put his hand on her arm.
âSheâs with me,â Kyle said easily.
âThis is a bad part of town,â Elliott went on patiently. âMurders happen here.â
âItâs okay,â Kyle reassured him. âSheâs fine.â He replaced the hose and dug into his pocket. âI need some change.â
Elliottâs head moved in the direction of the office, and Kyle mouthed âIâll hurryâ as he started in. Darcy again concentrated on her helmet strap, but felt Elliottâs hand return to her arm. When she looked up, he had taken his glasses off, and his wide, pale gray eyes were only inches from hers.
âI was right,â he mumbled. âWasnât I.â
A coldness crept through her, yet she managed to hold his stare. âAbout what?â
âYou know.â His expression was blank. âThe murder.â One finger raised until it was level with her chin. âYou know. It really happened.â
âElliottââ
âAnd I remembered. About the ring. Kyle and Brandon thought it would look good in Brandonâs play. Maybe they took it.â
âAre you talking about me?â Kyle clapped Elliott good-naturedly on the shoulder and winked at Darcy. âSome friend you are. I canât turn my back for a minuteââ
âWe were talking about rings,â Darcy said. âDid Brandon borrow a ring from the Dracula exhibit?â
âNo â¦â Kyle looked puzzled. âHe decided he didnât want to use it after all.â
âWe were talking about murder,â Elliott murmured. âYou should believe me when I say things will happen.â
Kyle saw Darcyâs anxious face and shook his head with a patient smile. âNo more talk about murder, okay, Elliott? No more talk about the future.â He swung one leg over the bike and checked to make sure Darcy was holding on tight. âThereâs only one thing about Darcyâs future we both know for sure, right, Elliott? That Brandon will find some way to be in it.â
Elliottâs mouth lifted tentatively at the corners, and he put his sunglasses back on. âI know your future, too. But you wonât like it.â
Kyle regarded him curiously and let out a soft groan. âI donât need this tonight ⦠what is it?â
âTheyâre auditioning a new drummer. I heard them talking about it.â
Kyle leaned his head upon the handlebars and groaned even louder. âI knew this was going to happen! But why is it happening to me?â
âThey donât know that I know.â
Kyle sighed and looked up again. Darcy could see the hurt in his eyes.
âAre you positive?â
âIâm positive.â
âWell, this ought to make my parents happy,â Kyle said softly. He revved the motor and gave Elliott a sad
