door to run to the clubhouse.
âOh! You scared the wits out of me.â Mom clenches her hand over her chest, her other hand offers the cordless phone.
âSorry,â I mumble, trying to step around her.
âWait.â Mom grabs my arm. âSteph is on the phone.â
âSteph?â I ask stupidly.
âYes.â Mom studies me, her eyebrow raised in concern. âAre you okay?â
âYeah.â I take the phone and turn around to close the door again.
âYouâre welcome,â Mom shouts when the door shuts in her face.
I havenât spoken to Steph since our last fight. What can she want?
Chapter Fourteen
I stare at the phone, afraid to answer it. If Steph starts talking about Mike, weâll argue again. But if she misses me as much as I miss herâ¦
I sit on the bed and raise the phone to my ear. âHello?â My voice croaks like a sick frog.
âHi,â Steph whispers.
Our breathing is the only thing breaking the silence between us. The phone is slippery in my sweaty palm. Why doesnât she say anything? Did she change her mind? Maybe I canât hear her over my pounding heart.
âHow are you?â Steph finally asks.
How am I? Iâm an emotional wreck. I feel lost and betrayed and I miss you like crazy. You havenât been here for me through any of this.
Shying away from voicing any of these thoughts, I shrug my shoulders as if sheâs in the room. âFine. You?â
âOkay. Look â this is kind of awkward â maybe I could come over?â
âWhy?â I donât want her here if weâre going to fight again.
âBecause I miss you, you dork,â Steph says and then gasps. âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to say that.â
I catch my breath. Did she say she misses me?
âAre you there? Kat?â
A bubble of laughter escapes. Trying to hold it in, I start to snort and then weâre both laughing.
âIâll meet you at the front door,â I gasp between giggles, and we both hang up.
I throw open the front door just as Steph runs up the driveway.
âHey, Dork,â she says, bounding up the steps. We laugh and hug, goofy grins plastered on our faces.
âIâm sorry,â we both say in unison and collapse again into a fit of giggles.
âCome on upstairs.â We run to my room. Closing the door, I grin at my best friend. Itâs so good to have her back.
âIâm sorry,â she says. âI donât know how many times I picked up the phone to call you and chickened out. I was hurt that you didnât need me when Sarah disappearedââ
âThatâs not true! You werenât home. You were out with Mike.â I flinch at saying his name.
âThatâs not fairâ¦.â
I hold up my hand. âIt doesnât matter. You werenât home when it happened. It doesnât matter where you were.â
Liar. You were upset that she was out with Mike when you needed her. Ignoring the voice inside my head, I flop down on the bed beside Steph. She has that look on her face, as if she is trying to hold something back.
âWhat?â I ask.
âNothing.â
âCome on. Whatâs up? Itâll kill you to keep your mouth shut.â
Steph smiles before becoming serious. âYou okay, Kat?â
Iâm suddenly wary. What does she know?
âOf course Iâm okay. What do you mean?â
âWell, Scott said you havenât been yourself lately.â
âScott doesnât know what heâs talking about. Besides, why were you talking about me like that?â
âDonât get mad. I had to practically drag it out of him. I wanted to know how you were after Sarahâs disappearing act. He told me that I shouldâve come to see how youâre doing. Heâs right. Iâm sorry we fought.â
I shrug, uncomfortable with this conversation.
âHe told me you arenât yourself.
