much money did he lose?â
âFifty-three thousand dollars so far, but weâre still auditing past years. It might be more.â
âHas the Diocese paid the bills?â
âNot all of them. I froze payment on all invoices and charges incurred by Reverend Duvoir. Our legal department contacted the casino by e-mailâthey have a âcontact usâ hot key on their web pageâand suggested they forgive current charges and refund prior payments.â
âWhat did they say?â
âThey e-mailed our attorney, Mr. Scalisi, back and said thatâin their wordsââno one welches on a gambling debt and gets away with it.ââ
âSounds ominous. Then what?â
âWe disputed the unpaid charges directly with the banks that issued the cards. After some negotiation, they reversed them and refused to tender payment to R-O-L.â
âHow much was disputed?â
âAs I said, more than fifty thousand dollars.â
Mackayâs right eyebrow lifted involuntarily. âWho eventually sustains the losses?â
âThe casino, although I donât see how theyâve actually lost anything. Then the threats started.â
âThreats?â
âA man who never identified himself called repeatedly, at all hours of the day and night. When I wouldnât agree to pay, he threatened to send âenforcersâ to visit.â
âVisit whom?â
âHe didnât say, but it isnât hard to figure out who he had in mind.â
âDid you contact the police for protection?â
âGod protects us.â
âAnd Reverend Duvoir?â
Davidson sighed. âWe were evaluating treatment programs. Jacques was sick but, aside from his addiction, he was an exemplary and revered priest who was loved by his parishioners. Iâm afraid your witch hunt has tainted his memory forever.â
âGrand Jury testimony is secret.â
âThatâs what President Clinton thought about his relationship with Monica Lewinski.â
âIs there anything else we need to know about Reverend Duvoir, Bishop Davidson?â
His eyes were wet-shiny blue pools. âYou already know too much.â
âWould you like to take a short break?â
âNo, thank you.â
âLetâs move on then. The subpoena also ordered you to produce personnel records for Reverends Benedetti and Thompson. Did you bring those records with you?â
Davidson straightened his back and cleared his throat. âNo.â
âExcuse me?â
âAnd I refuse to answer questions about them.â
âRefusing on the grounds that truthful answers to my questions would tend to incriminate you?â
âI didnât say that.â
âWell, Bishop Davidson, that is the only grounds for refusing to answer my questions without being held in contempt of court.â
âThe order Judge Keefe issued isnât enforceable so long as Judge Woods has our motion to quash your subpoenas under submission.â
âIf that is your attorneyâs advice, itâs bad advice, and following it will cause you trouble,â Mackay admonished him. âWhy donât you step outside the jury room and consult with legal counsel?â
Davidson hesitated, then stood. âPerhaps I shall.â
Â
âThatâs not what I said.â Scalisiâs voice rose as he addressed Bishop Davidson. âYou told me you were bringing all three files.â
Escalante stood at a discreet distance, gazing out the window, trying unsuccessfully not to overhear the confidential attorney-client communication.
âI changed my mind, now calm down before you have a heart attack.â Davidson patted Scalisiâs arm.
Mackay opened the door and stepped into the hallway, where she saw the two men in a heated discussion.
âWith all due respect, Mr. Scalisi, you should reconsider the advice you gave Bishop Davidson,â Mackay said.
