inquisitive brow, but he didnât question Marcel. âYes, sir.â
Marcelâs gaze narrowed in suspicion as he followed Charlie toward the front door. Surely if something was truly going on between the driver and his secretary the man wouldâve protested more about her being left alone with him.
Charlie stopped a few feet from the front door and pivoted around to face Marcel. âIf I may, sir?â
Marcelâs heart sank. âWhat is it, Charlie?â
Charlie looked unsure of himself. âAbout Ms. Guy,â he began.
âWhat about her?â Marcel asked almost defensively.
Charlie hesitated. âSheâs not like the other women you tend toâ¦date.â
Surprised, Marcel arched his brows. âOh?â
Charlie swallowed. âYes, sheâs, uh, special.â
With his good humor finally returning, Marcel laughed and crossed his arms. âIâm not sure I understand what youâre getting at.â
âNo disrespect, sir,â Charlie said with an awkward grin. âBut I believe you do.â
Marcelâs smile froze and the laugh he forced out cracked under pressure. âI guess maybe I do,â he finally said. âBut, uh, thereâs just one problem, Charlie. Iâm not dating Diana. Sheâs my secretary. I have a rule about dating employees, remember?â
Charlie remained unmoved by his candor. âI knowyou as Casanova Brown as well, sir. And for him, rules have been known to be broken.â
Â
Diana settled back on the bed and picked up the bedside phone to call home. Her grandmother was undoubtedly out of her mind with worry.
After sheâd dialed the number, she wasnât even sure the line rang once before Louisaâs shaky voice answered.
âHey, Nana. Itâs me. And yes, Iâm fine.â
âOh, thank God,â Louisa sighed, and then immediately tore a chunk out of Dianaâs hide. âWhy didnât you call? Do you know how worried Iâve been?â
âIâm sorry,â Diana said and quickly informed her of what sheâd been through that evening.
âWhy on earth would you agree to feed the manâs dog when youâreââ
âI know, I know. I wasnât thinking right. And Lord knows Iâve learned my lesson.â
âWell, Caleb is out looking for you,â Louisa said. âIâll call him and tell him youâre all right.â
âThanks, Nana. Iâll be home soon.â
âWell, you can take your time, dear. Now that I know where you are, I can get some sleep. Oh, tell Marcel I said hi.â
âYouâve got the wrong idea, Nana.â
âDonât take away my dreams, Diana.â
Sighing, Diana ended the call. She could already feel exhaustion seeping into her bones.
She looked around and for the first time took in the roomâs excessive extravagance: beautiful paintings, expensive colored glass vases and a plasma television. âMust be nice.â
What was taking Marcel so long? she wondered. She stood up from the bed and walked over to the door. She reached for the knob, and then thought she should at least check to make sure he and Brandy werenât on the other side ready to pull some horrible joke on her.
She leaned over and pressed her ear against the door. In the next second, it flew open and smashed her back against the wall.
âDiââ
âOoww!â
Marcel pulled the door and peeked around it. âOh, Iâm so sorry.â He closed the door and went to her. âAre you all right?â
She held up a hand to keep him back, but when her other hand touched her throbbing nose, she howled in pain.
âDi?â
âWhat are you trying to do, kill me?â She inched away from the wall and returned to the bed. âI donât know whoâs worse, you or the dog.â
Marcel followed her, trying to get a good look at what heâd done. âIâll go get you
