and dialed.
One ring. Two.
âHello,â a female voice answered.
âHello,â Bernice responded, a little uncertainly. She must have written the number down incorrectly. There was only one way to find out and that was to ask. âThis phone number was given to me by Emily Springer. Is Charles Brewster there?â
The woman hesitated. âYes, but heâs unavailable at the moment.â
Bernice swallowed a gasp and before she could think better of it, slammed down the telephone. Dear heaven, what was happening? Feeling light-headed, she waited until her pounding heart had settled down before she tried to call Rayburn at his apartment. She wanted to know what was going on and she wanted to know right this minute.
When Rayburn didnât answer, she tried his office and learned he was still in Boston.
âWhy?â she demanded of his assistant. âWhy is he still in Boston?â
âIâm sorry, Mrs. Brewster,â the young woman said politely. âMr. Brewster phoned the office this morning and thatâs what he said.â
âHe has his cell phone?â Of course he did, because heâd called her on it the night before.
âI believe he does.â
Bernice carefully punched out the cell number and waited. The phone rang four times before her son answered. âRay Brewster.â
âRayburn,â she gasped, overwhelmed by her childrenâs odd behavior. His greeting had sounded far too friendly, as if heâd been laughing. Well, this was no laughing matter!
âMother.â The sound of her voice sobered him up fast enough, she noticed. Something very suspicious was going on. âWhere are you?â she demanded.
âIâm forty-three years old. I no longer need to check in with you.â
How dared he speak to her in that tone! She was about to say so when Rayburn chuckled.
âIf you must know, Iâm in Boston at Charlesâs condo.â
âThereâs a woman there.â
âI already know that, Mother.â
Bernice gasped. âYou spent the night with her?â
âI was in the same condo, not that itâs any of your business.â
Bernice pulled out her lace-edged hankie and clenched it tightly. âIâ¦I have no idea where your father and I went wrong that both my sonsââ
âMother, take a deep breath and start over.â
Bernice tried, she honestly tried, but her heart was pounding and her head spinning. âI phoned the number you gave me andâ¦another woman answered.â
âA woman? Are you sure you had the right number?â
âOf course Iâm sure. I asked and she said Charles was unavailable.â
âHold on, let me ask Emily who it might be.â
Emily, was it? âI see youâre on a first-name basis with thisâthis house-stealer.â
To her chagrin, Rayburn laughed. âHonestly, Mother, I think you missed your calling. You shouldâve been on the stage.â
Her husband used to make the same claim, and while she did have a good stage presence, she suspected Rayburn didnât mean it as a compliment.
Bernice could hear him in the background, but hard as she pressed her ear against the receiver, she couldnât make out what was being said.
âEmily says she doesnât have a clue who would be answering the phone at her place. Sheâll call later and find out if you wish.â
âIf I wish? â Bernice repeated.
âAll right, Iâll get back to you.â
Her son was about to hang up, but she still had more to say. âRayburn,â she shouted. âYou behave yourself with this woman, understand?â
âYes, Mother.â
The phone line went dead.
Â
âA woman answered?â Emily repeated after Ray ended the conversation with his mother. âNow, thatâs interesting.â
âWho do you think it might be?â
Emily shrugged. âDonât know, but itâll be easy
