Torn (Jay Gunner, #1)
deserve a vacation. So what about it? Are you ready to become a beach bum?”
I couldn’t decide what to do. It was a long week at work. I felt bad about Amanda. I’d lived with her for 18 months. While everything wasn’t perfect we’d had many good times together. I missed her.
Friday evening, I told Joy I wasn’t feeling well, and then went straight home. I wasn’t lying. I felt like a real louse. Amanda deserved better treatment. My actions had put her in danger. No wonder she moved out.
I entered the living room and had the shock of my life. Amanda jumped off the sofa, ran to me, and gave me a hug.
“Jay, I missed you too much. After staying with Noi this week, I packed my things and here I am. Yesterday I visited mom. After talking it over I realized I didn’t want to leave you. I’m nervous about security, but will get over it. I thought I’d surprise you. Is it Ok?”
I said, “I feel better seeing you. All week I’ve felt terrible. I dreaded coming home knowing you wouldn’t be here. Of course, it’s Ok.”
There was no good way out of my personal dilemma. Once Joy learned Amanda moved back in, she would flip out. Joy was keen on going to Bali.
Worrying how to best handle my relationship with Amanda and Joy was the main reason I felt lousy all week.  I wanted them both, and loved most the one I was with at the time.
Agent Cooper called Friday afternoon. His call ended my week on a sour note. He said I’d been upgraded to a person of interest in the FBI investigation of missing government property. Until further notice, without his permission, I was forbidden to travel out of Hong Kong.
I couldn’t go on like this. The stress was destroying me. I had to come to terms with my Amanda or Joy feelings, or I would lose them both. I had to choose.
I would cooperate with the FBI. I had to get them off my back. I would hire a good attorney. I would put a dead bolt on the front door, and see my arms merchant friend, Colin Seth, about buying a pistol.
It was time to man up.

About the Author
G erald Greene is a Vietnam War veteran, having served with the Navy Seabees near DA Nang, Vietnam. His squad was tasked to work on a Marine fire base near Hoi An. Memories are still vivid of life at the fire base and time in Vietnam.
The experiences of close contact with incoming mortar and heavy machine gun fire, occasional sniper rounds, 155mm and 105mm artillery batteries, B-52 rolling thunder bombing runs, F-4 airstrike's, and puff the magic dragon gunships, highlighted the tour of duty.
Living with US Marines for several months gave us respect for their dedication, professionalism and sense of duty to country. My squad was thrilled to be presented with Marine brass belt buckles when our work was completed. We wore them with pride.
Vivid descriptions of combat situations in Greene’s novels are sparked by these memories.
As an Air Force brat, Navy serviceman, financial consultant and later retired Greene lived and worked overseas in Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Pakistan, the Philippines, France, Germany, Vietnam and traveled through China, Macau, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos and most of Europe.
Greene’s interest in international travel and the unique features of being human are reflected in his novels.
