noticed that the female cop from inside the Quik Mart was watching him through the front window. âBut you are with a murderer.â
âSays you.â
âSays a jury of his peers.â
âWho convicted him on a technicality. He didnât shoot, Daddy, he drove . The law might see it as the same, but you know as well as me that itâs different.â
âWhat about the prison murder?â Carter asked. âHow does he explain that?â
âWhat?â
He could tell just from the sound of her voice that heâd blindsided her. âSo, he didnât tell you about that one?â he baited. âMaybe heâs not being as forthright as you give him credit for.â
âI donât believe you,â Nicki said.
âHe killed a fellow inmate,â Carter said, recalling the brief details sent on to him by both Chris Tu and Warren Michaels. âHe was about to be arrested for that when he bolted from the prison.â
She was stunned. He could tell from the depth of her silence. âSo, he hasnât been tried on that, then,â she said. She was fishing for anything that looked like hope.
âNickiââ
âNo, he must have had a good reason. Heâs not a violent man. He couldnât hurt anyone. He just couldnât .â
The circularity of her logic made his head swim. âLook, Nicki, I know itâs important for you to believeââ
âIâm not leaving him,â she said. âIâm not .â
âThen why are you calling me?â
Again, she was flustered. âI, uh, I just thought . . . I wanted . . .â
âYou wanted me to come and get you.â He said this gently. He had to be careful. If he pushed her too hard, sheâd hang up on him. âJust tell me where you are, sweetie. Give me the address, and I can be there in just a few minutes. Or, I can send the police.â The instant that wordâthe p wordâleft his lips, he knew heâd blown it.
âDammit, Daddy, itâs always the same with you. You donât understand anything.â
He cursed himself. In the heat of the moment, heâd said exactly what was on his mind. He knew better than to do that. Dammit! âOkay, then, no police,â he said. âI wonât call anyone. I promise.â He spoke quickly, fearful that sheâd hang up on him. âJust let me come and get you. Let me pick you up.â
âAnd then what?â she asked.
The question caught him unprepared. âWhat do you mean?â
âYou pick me up and then what? You said that they want to arrest me for that killing. If they really believe that I did it, then what happens after you pick me up?â
A sense of dread invaded Carterâs soul. He hadnât thought it through this far yet. âThen weâll get it straightened out. Somehow.â

Nicki sneaked a glance around the corner to look at Brad. The food had arrived, and he was eating. She ducked her head back before he could see her.
âNicki, are you there? Pay attention to me.â
âIâm here, Daddy. You havenât answered my question. I ran away in the first place because I didnât want to spend my last months in a hospital. I sure as heck donât want to spend them in jail.â Past the rain-spattered glass on this end of the restaurant, the fishing pier extended out a hundred yards over the churning sea. She envied the few remaining holdouts whose lives allowed them the luxury of fishing in the rain.
Her fatherâs tone lost some of its edge. âWeâll show that youâre innocent. Weâll show that heâs the one with the record of killing, and that youâre deserving of mercy, under the circumstances.â
âThere are no circumstances!â It came out as a whispered shout, but a shout nonetheless, too loud for the tight surroundings. âHe didnât kill anyone. I didnât and he
