lasagna for Scorsese no less. By the way, speaking of directors,â Veronica said, leaning in again. Those shoulders and long armsâhe imagined how they would looked raised above her in handcuffs. Ah, but in his arty script, there were no tasteless flashbacks to her torture. âI just finished doing ADR on
Motherâs Helper II,
â Veronica said with a mischievous look.
âOh. Right.â His back ached. His stomach fluttered.
What does she know?
Surely Jeff had kept his mouth shut.
Lamont burst through the swinging doors like a gunfighter, heading their way.
âGuess who went out of his way to ask me to say hello to you?â she teased.
Hurry up! Say it!
He nodded to encourage her. Unfortunately, Veronica paused for him to guess. âYour director?â he whispered.
Too late. Lamont arrived in time to overhear Veronica say, âExactly. Jeff Mark told me you were BFF as children. In fact, he told me a funny story about how you used to tape-record his parents without them knowing . . .â
âWhat?â Lamont, still standing, frowned down at Brian with the irritation of a boss who hasnât been kept in the loop. âYou and Jeff Mark were what?â
Veronica looked up. âOur entrées?â
Lamont sat down. âTheyâll be right out.â He snapped at Brian, âDid you order the vegan salad?â Brian nodded. âDidnât you have a salad for an appetizer?â
âIâm vegan,â Brian said. âEverything else here is cooked in butter. Or worse.â
âGod, youâre even more of a fag than I thought.â Lamont could use the F-word because he was openly gay. That is, openly gay since his bankruptcy and release from the Betty Ford Center.
Veronica defended Brianâs diet: âWell, itâs good for you. You look great.â
Lamont stroked his eyebrows, pinched his nose, caressed his mustache and said to Brian, âWhat the fuck is this BFF bullshit about Jeff Mark and you?â
Veronica grinned, proud to have information the all-knowing Lamont didnât. âThey grew up together. They were âbestest of friends,â Jeff said. He was adorable about it.â She turned to Brian. âJeff said you used to put on shows together, thatâs how you both learned to be storytellers.â
So now Jeff thinks of himself as a storyteller. Oh really.
Lamont made a face. âBrian Moran, Iâve known you, what? Ten years. Weâve done three projects together. You never said anything about knowing the Mark Man.â
âI donât know him. I havenât seen him since I was eleven.â
âThatâs what he said!â Veronica announced triumphantly. âEven though you and Jeff were best friends, he said you havenât spoken or seen each other since you were eleven.â
âYou just finished ADR on
Helper II,
â Brian tried to steer off this course. âIsnât that late to be doing ADR?â
âWe did some reshooting after the first previews. The studio is very nervous. Theyâve got three hundred and sixty million in it.â
âJeff canât fail. Heâs a genius,â Gregory grumbled, as if that were a damning fault. He shifted in his chair to confront Brian. âYouâre in the movie business. Heâs the top box-office director and the most powerful and active producer in the businessâthe little prick. Why the fuck arenât you in touch with him?â
Brian shrugged. âI donât
not
talk to him. I just donât know him.â He saw their entrées coming. âAh, lunch.â
âWhat happened? You fought? Please tell me you punched his lights out. Of course I love Jeffrey. Heâs a genius, there will never be another like him, but it would be a gas to think that, just once, a writer decked him.â Jeff was notorious for hiring Pulitzer Prize â winning playwrights and novelists, pampering them
