cop-out. And I thought I was the one asking the questions here?â
Cass ran a hand through the top of her hair and let it fall to one side. âIf you plan on asking a lot of questions, letâs make this more interesting. Ever play Know It All?â
Alex shook his head. âWhat is it?â
âMy roommates and I used to play it in college. One person asks a question to the other. If the person doesnât want to answer truthfully, they can lie or sayâpass.â But then they have to take a shot, and the question goes back to the person who asked it for them to answer.â
Alex smiled before getting up. âIâm in,â he said. âTequila okay?â
âYou have any limes?â
âI think I have lemons,â Alex said, heading for the kitchen. There was something intriguing about this game. Though Alex and Cass had been seeing a lot of each other lately and heâd known her for more than a year and a half, he realized that heâd never really gotten to
know
her. At least not in the sense that he now felt he should.
âLemonsâll work,â Cass called.
Alex chopped up the fruit and grabbed the bottle of liquor and two shot glasses from the cabinet. âYou sure you want to do this? You know I interrogate people for a living, right?â
âIâll take my chances,â Cass said, as Alex put the plate of lemons, the bottle, and the glasses down on the coffee table. Then he filled each glass.
âIâm assuming youâre going first?â Cass asked.
Alex rubbed his hands together in excitement.
This is going to be fun.
âIâll start off easy,â he said. âWhat was the first concert you ever went to?â
âNo Doubt.â
âNo Doubt makes my skin crawl.â
Cass laughed. âWe actually have that in common then. I was never really a fan, but my sisters were going and they actually wanted to take me. I was eleven. There was no way I was passing up a night with my older sisters and no real adult supervision.â Cass put a finger to her lips. âMy turn,â she said. âHow many women have you slept with?â
âOh, come on,â Alex said. âI went easy on you.â
Cass shrugged, a pleased smirk on her face.
âFour,â Alex lied, before throwing back a shot and refilling it. âI feel like thereâs no right answer to that one. Question goes to you now.â
âOne,â Cass answered simply.
Alexâs eyes narrowed in confusion. âYouâve only slept with one person? You canât pass. You have to be honest.â
âI was. Iâve slept with one woman.â
A slow smile crept over Alexâs mouth. âFair enough. You go again?â
âYeah, because you passed last time, so the one I just answered counted as your question.â Cass toyed with the label of her beer bottle, peeling it and resticking it while she thought. âOkay, what pets did you have growing up?â
Alex was surprised by the question. Why would Cass want to know about his pets? But he didnât bother overanalyzing it; he was happy it was so innocuous. âI had two dogs: a chocolate Lab named Tootsie and a German shepherd named Mitchell.â
âMitchell?â Cass let out a laugh. âWho names their dog Mitchell?â
âHey, Mitchellâs a solid name. My sister named Tootsie after the candy. So when we got another dog a few years later, my parents said I could name him. I think Mitchellâs a cool name. Strong, you know?â
âIt reminds me of one of those guys from Best Buy who comes to your house to fix your computer so you donât have to bring it to the store.â Cass squeezed the bridge of her nose. âShit. What are those guys called?â
âThe Geek Squad.â
âYes.â Cass pointed at him. âMitchellâs part of theGeek Squad. I mean, not your dog. You know what I mean.â
