bricks and chunks of tower and mismatched bits of crenellation.
She hit the next tower, smashed through it, hit the top of the wall beyond, rolled along the crenellations, came loose, flew some more, hit the top of a mountain, took the top of the mountain with her, and disappeared from view.
The hurricane ended as suddenly as it had begun.
Shen Longâs stomach was still big. But not as big.
Xiao swept down from the sky and landed on his shoulder. âUncle! Thanks!â
âAnything for my favorite niece,â Shen Long said in a more subdued voice. âBesides, I canât stand that princess. Sheâs as rotten as her mother.â
âIs she dead?â Mack asked.
Xiao jumped in to do quick introductions.
âNo, Mack, sheâs not dead. Not even killed,â Shen Long said regretfully. âBut it will take her a while to put herself back together. Youâd better get going. She wonât fall for the same thing twice.â
âActually, Uncle, I was wondering if you could give us a ride.â
âA ride?â Shen Long scratched his chin with one five-clawed foot. âWhere to?â
âGermany,â Mack said. âSome place called the Egge Rocks or Externsteine.â
âExternsteine?â Shen Long looked troubled.
âOr the nearest airport,â Mack said. âI know itâs a long way.â
Xiao, human once again, gave Mack a significant look. In a whisper she said, âThe problem is not the distance. Itâs the memories.â
Shen Long looked stricken. His jovial face was sad and creased with worry. He seemed to have decided what direction Germany was in and was staring that way, but with eyes that saw something else entirely.
âShe wouldnât even remember me,â Shen Long said softly.
âNo one could ever forget you, Uncle. But it was a long time ago.â
âI will take you,â Shen Long said reluctantly. âBut I am not hanging around. Otherwise sheâll think I came to see her.â
âAs you wish, Uncle,â Xiao said.
The dragon lay as flat as he could, and Xiao, followed by Mack, Jarrah, and Stefan, climbed up his side and onto his back. Like all Chinese dragons, he rose effortlessly, and headed away from the sun.
âWhat was all that about?â Mack asked. He was trying not to think about what would happen if he fell off. Shen Long was gaining altitude pretty quickly. Soon they were brushing the undersides of the clouds.
âAn old love of my uncleâs. Her name was Nott.â
âNot what?â
âNott. Just Nott.â
Mack waited as long as he could before asking, âNot what?â
âNott. That was her name. Nott.â
âIs that a joke?â Mack asked. âLike one of those ânotâ jokes? Like if I said, âI like your dress . . . not.ââ
âWhatâs the matter with my dress?â Xiao asked, a little irritated.
Leaning forward, Jarrah asked, âNot what?â
âNot a what, a who,â Mack explained to Jarrah. âNothing!â he answered Xiaoâs question.
âOkay, then,â Jarrah said. âNot who?â
âAre we there yet?â Stefan asked.
âI think Nott was Shen Longâs girlfriend,â Mack yelled back to Jarrah. The wind was fierce and cold now that Shen Long was picking up speed.
âThen whatâs this about nothing?â Jarrah asked.
âItâs not about nothing,â Mack said. âItâs about Nott.â
There was a moment or two of silence. Then Jarrah said, âYou know, I could push you right off this dragonâs back.â
Mack thought that over for a second or two then said, âIâd prefer you not. Heh.â
And so the first three of the Magnificent Twelve flew aboard a pot-bellied dragon into the west. And Stefan was there, too.
Mack leaned close to Stefan, not wanting the others to hear him. âDude, weâre
