you. As if Iâd always known you. As if Iâd only been waiting, forever, for you to show up, so the two of us could get on with the rest of our lives. Is that crazy?â
She couldnât help sighing. âWell, yeah. Pretty much.â
He laughed again. âThen go ahead. Call me crazy. Thatâs okay. Call me whatever you want. Just tell me youâll give itâgive usâa chance.â
She admitted the truth. âI canât stop thinking about you, either.â
âGood.â His voice was a rough whisper, one thatsent a hot shiver running under her skin. âSo then. What else is there to do but go for it?â
âGreg?â
âYeah?â
âI, um, well, I talked to Carly.â
He knew what she meant. âAbout us.â He didnât sound upset.
âYes. This morning. I felt like such a cheat and liar, you know?â
âYou werenât. You arenât.â
âWell, I sure feel like one. I talked to my sister about it, about us, about how guilty I felt. Angela said I needed to get it out there, to tell Carly the truth. So I did. Finally. I told herâ¦how you asked me out and I turned you down. How you showed me your house on Sycamore Street. And how I kissed you, even though Iâd told you I wouldnât go out with you. She wasâ¦it really hurt her, Greg. She kicked me out of her house and told me never to come back.â
âMegan. Damn it. Iâm sorry.â
âMe, too. But thatâs not going to make Carly feel any better. She just wonât give up hoping that youâll go back to her.â
âBut Iâm not going back to her.â
âMaybe notâ¦â
âNo maybe about it.â
âShe didnât know about the house. Iâm sorry if you didnât want her to know.â
âMegan. There is nothing for you to be sorry about. Look. Do you want me to have a talk with her?â
âDo youâ¦want to have a talk with her?â
âNot really. But I will, if you think itâll help.â
Megan considered the ideaâand rejected it. âNo. Youâre divorced. You can date whoever you want, and Carly doesnât have any right to be upset about it. I think, in her heart, she knows that. On the other hand, she considered me a friend. And I betrayed our friendship.â
âThatâs not true.â
Megan felt a sad smile tug at the corners of her mouth. âWell. Thank you for defending me.â
âWe both know youâve been trying like hell to shake me. You wouldnât have âbetrayedââyour word, not mineâCarly if I hadnât pushed you to see me.â
âWhether you pushed me or not, I did go to lunch with you. Twice. I went with you to see your house. I kissed you.â
âNo. I kissed you. â
âAnd I kissed you back.â
âMegan.â
She made a low noise in her throat. âWhat?â
âItâs done. Carly knows. You were honest with her. Over time, sheâll see that itâs not fair to blame you.â
âI hope so.â Megan sat a little straighter in the kitchen chair. âAnd as for you and meâ¦â She hesitated.
He didnât. âDinner,â he said. âTomorrow night. Iâd say we could start with lunch, but I heard a rumor that weâre having it catered in the conferenceroom. The place will be crawling with executives. No privacy at all.â
âDinner,â she repeated, and realized she was on the verge of telling him yes. Then she thought of the kids. âI usually pick up my sisterâs kids from summer camp at fourâ¦.â
âCan you get out of it, just this once?â
âIâll check with her. But Greg, I donât want toâ¦rush anything, you know?â
âNo problem. Weâll take it nice and slow.â
Did she believe him? Not really. Still, she agreed. âYeah. Okay. Slow is good.â
