Bruce entered Jonathan Tavishâs office after a brief tap against the doorframe. Jonathan looked up and arched a brow. âBruce, I thought youâd be guarding the family jewels, what with that houseful in the old estate.â
âHardly an estate, and totally a crumbling castle,â Bruce said, taking a seat. âActually, the more I walk around the place, the more amazed I am. Theyâve taken care of a ton of minor things that Iâve put off for years.â
âItâs tough when youâre keeping up with too much,â Jonathan agreed. He grinned. âNow, if you were just among the local peasant law-keepers, youâd be here year-round, plugginâ up holes at any given time. Soâ¦it seems youâre not quite as angry as you were when you first learned about your guests?â
Bruce angled his head slightly as he surveyed his friend. They were close in age, had known each other since childhood. They shared a passion for this little neck of the world, though they didnât always agree about how it should be run. Bruce was the local gentry, as it were, and Jonathan was the local law. But because Jonathan was local, and had always been local, he seemedto maintain a chip on his shoulder where Bruce was concerned.
One day, maybe, Jonathan would run for the position of provost. As such, he could implement more of his own ideas. Thus far, though, he seemed to like being Constable.
âIâve cooled down some, yes,â Bruce said. âSince no one threw them out in my absence, I thought another few days couldnât hurt too much.â
âAh,â Jonathan teased. âIt was the blonde, eh? What a beautyâand what absolute hell on wheels!â
âShe does have a way about her,â Bruce agreed. âBut this isnât the first time Iâve heard about this happening.â
âYour castle being taken over?â Jonathan said, puzzled.
Bruce shook his head. âThis sort of thing in general. People going through what they think are private enterprises or legitimate rental agencies and winding up in a similar circumstance. I really want to find out what happened in this situation.â
âLike you said, it happens too often.â
âYes, but this time it happened to be my castle that was taken over.â
âCome Monday, you can let those folks see all your records. They can bring their documents down, and weâll get someone on it right away. Unfortunately, sometimesâespecially in this age of the Internetâpeople can clean up their trails.â He lifted his hands. âI might have gotten started on it already, but they didnât want to hand over the documents.â
âItâs all theyâve got to prove anything.â
âGreat. They donât trust the law.â
âWell,â Bruce said, offering a certain sympathy. âThey donât trust me, either.â
âAh, there we are! In the same boat, as they say.â
âRight. But actually, thatâs not why Iâm here,â Bruce said.
âOh?â
Bruce tossed the newspaper on Jonathanâs desk.
âOh, that.â
âAye, oh, that!â
Jonathan shook his head. âBruce, theyâre not local girls disappearing.â
âBut in the last year, two bodies have been found in the forest.â
âIf you havenât noticed, itâs a big forest,â Jonathan reminded him.
âHave you had men out searching?â Bruce demanded.
âThis girl just disappeared,â Jonathan reminded him. âBut yes, Iâve had men out searching.â
âRight. The last two girls who disappeared wound up in our forest. We should be looking for this latest lass. Iâm willing to bet my bottom dollar thatâs where sheâs going to be.â
âCareful with that kind of prophecy, Bruce,â Jonathan warned, sitting back. âPeople will begin to think you know more
