middle-aged, medium build, dark hair, and has been seen wearing a White Sox capâblack with white letters.â
âOkay.â
âIf you can locate him, Iâd like you to follow him, see what heâs up to, and then report back to me if you learn anything.â
âThatâs all?â
âFor now.â
âHe some kind of threat to you?â
âPossibly.â
âIâm sure I could find a way to convince him to leave.â
If it was only that simple. âI wish you could.â
âJust say the word.â
âHe wonât go. And if you could convince him, heâd come back with the police in tow.â
Fontaine frowned.
âThis is serious. I canât really say any more.â
Standing, he nodded. âNo need. Iâll find the information you want.â
She reached for his hand. âYouâre saving my life.â
âJust returning the favor.â

Tessa was practicing with her crutches on the steps down to the garage when Jill strolled up the paved driveway holding a pie. âWhat are you doing out here?â she demanded. âYouâre supposed to rest, keep your leg up.â
âNot every minute,â said Tessa, thumping down the last step. âYouâre early. We donât need to leave for another half hour.â
âThis is crazy. You could fall and hurt yourself.â
Tessa was winded, but pleased to see that Jill had remembered the pie. âWhat is it? Blueberry?â
âStrawberry rhubarb.â
âAwesome, as Jonah would say. Have I told you lately that I love you?â
Jill rolled her eyes.
âNo, really,â said Tessa, turning all the way around to face her. âYou ⦠make my life worth living.â The sentiment was way too Hallmark card. Probably residual effects from last nightâs pain killers. Tears filled her eyes.
âAre you crying?â
âAt my horrific use of clichés.â
Jill leaned forward and cupped her hand under Tessaâs chin. âEarth to Tessa. I donât want anything bad to happen to you.â
It was amazing that the touch of Jillâs hand could still cause her heart to speed up. âIâm so sorry.â
âGood.â Clearly thinking there might be more to the apology, she said, âFor what?â
âThe way Iâve been behaving. Iâve been taking all my frustration out on you.â
âI wasnât sure youâd noticed.â
âAm I that thick?â
âSometimes. You took some of your frustration , as you call it, out on Jane and Cordelia last night, too.â
Tessa caught the amused gleam in Jillâs eye. âI know. Iâll apologize. Do you forgive me?â
âIâll consider it.â
When they kissed, Tessa lost her balance and ended up sitting down somewhat askew on the steps.
âSee,â said Jill. âYou shouldnât be outside alone.â
âIâm not. Youâre here.â
âIâm going to throw the pie at you.â
Waiting a beat, Tessa asked, âWhat do we do with Jonah?â
Jillâs shoulders drooped âI called my brother this morning.â
âAnd?â
âWe had a long talk. Apparently Jonah was suspended from school a couple of times last year. Once for smoking pot. Once for getting in a fight. It sounded like it was a bad one. Jonah completely lost his temper. Gavin says heâs been doing it a lot lately. He thinks heâs acting out because of all the problems at home, which is why he agreed to let him spend his senior year here with us.â
âScore,â said Tessa, thrusting her fist in the air. âHeâs a good kid with a great heart. He just needs to get away from all that strife.â
âMy brother wasnât happy that Jonah left the way he did or that he lied and then hitchhiked all the way up here. It sounds like things have gotten pretty
