realized. The others had been upstairs for what felt like a long time.
Maybe Craig had picked up on the same thing, because he suddenly said, âQuintin, you want me to go see whatâs going on?â
Quintin flashed him an impatient glance. âNo.â
âWhat the hell do you think Iâm going to do? Iâm half-dead and I donât have a weapon. Iâll just go up and see if Scooter needs help.â
âGo to the foot of the stairs,â Quintin said, âand just yell for him.â
Craig nodded and got up. âYeah, sure. Hey, Scooter!â he yelled when heâd reached the stairway. âWhatâs going on?â
âHeâs being a jerk!â Jamie shouted from above.
David felt his stomach lurch. Please, Jamie, for the love of God, watch your mouth. Weâre playing a dangerous game.
âHey!â Scooter objected angrily.
Craig glanced at Quintin, frowning.
Jamie appeared on the landing. âHe thinks I can make the smoke detector beep again,â he called down.
A beep? David thought. Theyâd heard a beep? It had to be Katâs phone. He didnât know whether to feel hopeful or even more terrified.
âHey, Scooter, get back down here,â Craig called.
He was gripping the banister to stay upright, David realized. He didnât look well, but he was basically fit, and he was still on his feet, despite being hurt and then left out in the car.
Scooter had defended Craig, David mused. And Quintin didnât trust him. He filed that information away for later.
Scooter appeared at the top of the stairway, the boys in front of him, and looked down. âDo smoke detectors beep?â he asked Quintin.
âOf course they beep,â David answered. He hoped he had just the right note of impatience in his tone.
âDo they?â Quintin asked him.
David frowned, hoping he was a decent actor. His pulse was pounding, and he realized that Quintin might not have to kill him, because he felt ready to have a heart attack all on his own. âA smoke detector beeps when you need to replace the battery,â he said.
âThen why isnât it still beeping?â Scooter asked loudly.
âBecause the battery beeps slowly at first, to warn you,â David answered.
âDid you look around up there?â Quintin demanded.
âOf course,â Scooter said.
âAnd?â
âI didnât find anything.â
âThen get back down here.â
âAll right. One more minute.â
David swallowed hard. Was Kat about to be discovered? And that beepâ¦
Had her phone worked?
Knowing he had to do something, David got up and started to walk toward the stairs.
âWhere the hell are you going?â Quintin demanded.
âUpstairs.â
Quintin shook his head. âYou stay right here.â
âLook, I know what the problem is. I can show Scooter, so you two donât have to be worried about anything going on.â
âIâll go,â Craig said.
âWhat? Are all you people deaf or just stupid? I said you stay here,â Quintin snapped.
David forced himself to sit back down calmly, then looked over at Skyler. She looked scared, her eyes too wide as they met his. He hoped Quintin wouldnât notice and realize something was going on.
She must have realized the danger, too, because she looked away and trailed her fingers over the piano keys. âCome on, guys, hurry up,â she called. âItâs time for Irish music.â
âOh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are callingâ¦â Uncle Paddy began.
Â
Scooter was prowling around the room again. Kat could hear him from her hiding place in the closet.
âPlease, come on,â Jamie begged, real fear in his voice. âDidnât you hear him? Your friend is starting to sound dangerous.â
âStarting?â Scooter said distractedly. âHe always sounds dangerous. He is dangerous.â
