âyes, of course. Where is she now? Can you see her?â
âNo. She doesnât have a wonderful mirror like the one in which youâre holding me prisoner.â
âHolding you prisoner? You jumped into it yourself!â
âBecause otherwise the same thing would have happened to me as the others.â
âDid you know them?â
âThey were all from my world. But I only knew my uncle. He didnât want me to come with him, but then I sneaked into his workroom at night and jumped into the mirror after him. He looked really dumb when he noticed it.â The phantom giggled. âOh, well, and then
I
looked dumb when I realized what had happened to us.â
âJawing,â
the Queen said,
ânothing but jawing.â
âLetâs talk about my mother again, all right?â
âSure,â said the phantom. âWhatever you want.â
âWhere is she now?â
âThe last time I saw her she was sitting on a dead witch in the middle of the sea.â He said it as matter-of-factly as if heâd seen her cooking.
âIn the sea?â Merle asked. âAre you sure?â
âI
know
how the sea looks,â he replied spitefully.
âYes ⦠yes, sure. But, I mean, what was she doing there?â
âHolding one hand in the water and creating a magic mirror out of it. So she could hold your hand. Remember?â
Merle was terribly confused. âSo can you only see her when she holds one hand in the water?â
âJust like you.â
âAnd you hear her too?â
âBoth of you.â
âBut then why canât I hear her?â
âWe could change places anytime,â he retorted snippily.
Merle thought for a while. âYou must tell me what she says. Does she know how to speak with you?â
âShe very quickly tumbled to the fact that thereâs someone in the mirror besides her little daughter. And she was polite enough to ask me my name first.â
âOh ⦠whatâs your name, then?â
âIâve forgotten.â
âBut howââ
âI said that she asked, not that I could give her an answer.â
âHow can anyone forget his name?â
âHow can anyone suddenly become a dust mark on a mirror? No idea. The only thing I can remember are the last few seconds in my uncleâs room. Everything before that is gone. But I have the feeling that itâs graduallycoming back. Sometimes I remember details, faces, even tunes. Perhaps if you carry me around for a few more years in your musty pocket, thenââ
This time it was she who interrupted him. âListen. Iâm sorry about what happened to you, but I canât do anything about it. No one forced you to run after your uncle. Soâdo you intend to help me or not?â
âYes, yes, yes,â he said, drawling.
âIf you can talk withââMerle hesitatedââmy mother, then you can pass on to her what I say. And the other way around.â
âA sort of translation, you mean?â
âExactly.â Now heâs got it, she thought, and even the Queen sighed somewhere deep in her thoughts.
âGuess I could probably do that.â
âThat would be very nice.â
âThen will you take me out of your pocket sometimes?â
âIf we ever get away from here in one piece, we might find a way to get you out of this mirror.â
âDo not be too generous with promises you may not be able to keep,â
said the Queen.
âThat wonât happen.â The phantom sounded a little sad. âI canât take on a body in your world. Everyone said that.â
âMaybe not a body. But a larger mirror. How about the sea?â
âThen Iâd be something like a sailor, wouldnât I?â
âI suppose.â
âHmm ⦠I guess that would be all right.â And then he began to sing a song, quite tunelessly, something about fifteen
