the woman who called me last week, says her two month old son belongs to Patrick.” Trevor hoped Patrick behaved himself until his arrest and that no other women fell victim to an assault at his hands. He’d never forgive himself if that happened, but at the same time, his hands were tied. He prayed the director gave the go-ahead to pursue a case against Patrick. “We’ll talk more in the morning.”

In the morning, Trevor awoke at dawn as the sun’s warm rays streamed through the curtains and spilled across his bed. He yawned and stretched, resisting the urge to roll over and catch another hour of sleep. He was due at headquarters in two hours though, and he needed time to speak with Emily and Daniel before he left. After showering and getting dressed, he strapped on his gun belt and walked downstairs, following the smell of coffee and bacon into the kitchen. Emily sat next to Daniel, glaring at a glass of milk.
“Is Daniel making you eat healthy again?” He chuckled as he went for the coffee pot. He grabbed a mug and poured a generous cup.
“It’s icky,” she said.
“Well, you’re not leaving the table until that glass is empty. So drink up, little girl.” Daniel’s voice sounded stern but contained an edge of humor.
When Trevor turned he noticed Emily fidgeting in her seat and he grinned, realizing she likely had a sore bottom. He wondered what she’d done to earn a spanking this time but decided to ask Daniel in private later.
“Well?” Emily said, sitting straighter. “Are you going to tell us what you found out yesterday, or are you deliberately trying to torture me?”
Trevor took a seat across from them, grabbing a slice of bacon from a serving dish. Taking a deep breath, he launched into his story, explaining everything he’d learned yesterday in Remsfield in great detail—from the visit to Connie Keller to the visit to Ms. Smith—as Emily listened, a hopeful glow filling her eyes. He also explained the process he had to go through, getting his captain to contact the director to secure the approval needed to officially open an investigation against Officer Patrick.
“So, how long will the paternity test take?” Emily swirled the milk around in her glass and took a hesitant sip.
“After both blood samples are in, probably five to ten days. We can put a rush on it though so it doesn’t take the full ten days.” Trevor bit into the crisp bacon, watching the emotions play across Emily’s face as she processed this information. He knew it was a lot to take in.
“How long until the director gives you approval for the investigation?” Daniel asked, standing up to clear the plates.
Trevor rose up, adjusted his gun belt, and headed to the coffee pot with his now empty mug. “Hopefully no more than a week.” He paused, turning around to face them. “I’ll be lying in my report about Emily’s location. I’m going to say she crashed outside the ranch but that she left the ranch a few hours later. I won’t risk having her arrested before we get the ball rolling against Patrick. It’s still important that she remain hidden, and if any law enforcement officers show up here, she needs to stay out of sight until the charges against her are dropped. Once the charges are dropped, she can mysteriously reappear back on the ranch.”
“Understood,” Daniel said.
Emily shot to her feet, lines of worry surrounding her eyes. “Wait a second. Can’t you get in trouble for that? I don’t want you to lose your job over me. That’s ridiculous.” She glanced from Daniel to Trevor. “I’ll turn myself in. If I can’t make bail, then I won’t be in jail for long anyway, right? Only about two weeks, right?”
Trevor leveled a stern look on her and prepared to use his most authoritative tone. “Absolutely under no circumstances are you to turn yourself in, Emily. You’ll end up transferred back to county in Remsfield, and Patrick could get to you in jail.” He jabbed a
