spilled out onto the bed sheet. Liâl Monk looked embarrassed that he had been unable to control himself and that was the moment Sophie realized it was his first time too. Sophie and Liâl Monk had sex twice more that night. Each time was a bit better than the last. The following morning, they went back to their regular lives and playing the role of best friends. Thought they tried to act as if it hadnât happened, they both knew that it did.
After the night they shared, they both expected it to cause some type of awkwardness, but it actually brought them closer together. They still hadnât crossed the line of becoming an actual couple, but it pushed them into the âfriends with benefitsâ zone. Liâl Monk continued to chase something that he couldnât have, while Sophie watched from a distance, suffering in silence. She had tried to move on with her life by having other boyfriends, but always found a reason to break up with them. She was lovesick and only Liâl Monk could cure what ailed her. Eventually Liâl Monk came around, and with great hesitation she let him into her heart. Liâl Monk and Sophieâs romance blossomed into something magical, which drew adoration and hate from others.
None of the girls in the neighborhood would give Liâl Monk a second look when he was broke and dusty, but now that he had status it seemed like every time Sophie turned around she had to chase away some skank who was trying to invade his space. A time or two, Sophie even found herself having to lay hands on chicks over Liâl Monk. She had worked long and hard to land her childhood crush, and she had no problems making a women bleed for trying to take what belonged to her.
âYouâre right, ma.â Liâl Monk took one last swig of the beer before pouring the rest out on the curb and placing the bottle down on the side of the crate he had been sitting on.
âDamn, my girl got your pouring your beer out? You must be sprung on her goodies,â Tasha teased Liâl Monk.
âAinât nobody sprung on nothing,â Liâl Monk disputed. Times like that he was glad he was dark skinned so that they couldnât tell that he was blushing. âSo, where are yâall just coming from?â He changed the subject.
âHad to do a little shopping,â Sophie told him.
Liâl Monk looked at her empty hands. âHow you shopping and I donât see no bags in your hands?â he asked suspiciously.
âBecause I dropped the stuff off at home already,â she told him.
âUmm hmm, probably because you didnât want me to see how you fucked up the money I gave you,â Liâl Monk said, half jokingly.
Sophie sucked her teeth. âThere you go on your bullshit. If you must know, I bought the books I needed for school, not clothes. Furthermore, for as much as I appreciate what you give me, I do have a job, remember?â
âHow can I forget when youâre always throwing it up in my face?â Liâl Monk asked.
âI donât throw it in your face. I just like to make sure that you donât lose sight of the fact that I ainât no slouch. Iâm more than willing to go out and get it instead of waiting around for it to be given. Besides, Iâm proud of the fact that I have a job.â
âEven if itâs just a little supermarket gig,â Tasha said slickly.
âTasha, fuck you with your hating-ass. At least I got a job that donât require me to get checked for STDs every thirty days,â Sophie shot back.
âSophie, you know you donât have to keep working at that supermarket. I can take care of you while youâre chasing that college degree,â Liâl Monk told her. Nobody had been happier than him when Sophie graduated high school that summer. Liâl Monk suggested that she take some time off to enjoy being out of school for a while, but Sophie wanted to immediately
