of her unavoidable cleavage giving her away. He watched, impressed despite himself, as Dan slipped effortlessly into flirty mode.
âNot today, doll. Things to do, people to see. You know how it is.â
She shrugged prettily.
âWell, youâd better make it next week. We canât have you going to seed now, can we? Not after all your hard work.â
Even though she was looking at Dan, Josh couldnât shake off the feeling that she was referring to him when she said that thing about âgoing to seed.â It was always like this when he went out with Dan, that feeling of suffering from comparison.
âDoll?â Josh inquired, as the woman moved off, ponytail swinging behind her.
Dan smirked. âIâm using it in a post-ironic way, naturally.â
âOf course you are. So go on. Back to your mistress. I donât suppose you slept at her place last night?â
Dan pressed his lips together.
âNo offence, but I think the less you and Hannah know about where I am, the better. I donât want to put you two in an awkward position.â
âItâs a bit late for that! So you are with her, then?â
âI didnât say that. I just think itâs best Sasha doesnât know where I am at the moment, and if I tell you youâll either feel obliged to tell her, or youâll feel bad about not telling her. Either way itâs shit.â
Josh had to agree it was shit.
âI still canât believe youâre splitting up. I always thought you were so together, you and Sasha. All those âI love youâs.ââ
âYeah, well. That was Sashaâs doing, really. Sheâs very needy, emotionally, if you know what I mean. If I texted her and didnât include a kiss or a âlove you,â sheâd act like it was the end of the fucking world.â
âArenât you worried, then, about what this is going to do to her?â
Dan shook his head.
âUnderneath the neediness and that fragile âtouch me and Iâll breakâ exterior, Sasha has a rod of steel running through herâIâm not even joking. Sheâs the hardest person I know.â
Seeing Joshâs expression, he held up his hand defensively.
âThatâs not a criticism. Iâm still really fond of Sasha.â
âFond? Sheâs your wife, for Godâs sake, not your granny!â
The whole conversation was making Josh feel uncomfortable. How was it possible to go from love to fond in just two weeks? And if it could happen to Dan and Sasha, couldnât it also happen to him and Hannah?
âSheâs not going to be my wife for too much longer,â Dan pointed out matter-of-factly.
âYouâve already seen a lawyer?â
âNo. Of course I havenât. We donât need lawyers, Josh. Itâs not going to be that sort of breakup. Iâm not out to shaft Sasha. Sheâs the mother of my daughter, for fuckâs sake. Iâm going to be more than generous. She can have half the money from the house, even though I put up most of the deposit and have paid the entire mortgage and every single bill since we got it. If we split the equity, sheâll have more than enough to buy a two-bedroom garden flat in the same area, on the same street, even. Something like youâve got, only a bit flashier, if you know what I mean.â
âThanks.â
âI didnât mean it like that. Itâs justâyou know what Sashaâs like, everything has to be perfect. Then I could buy my own place nearby so that when Septemberâs a bit older, she can walk between the two. I was even thinking I might get something near that new secondary school, so that sheâd definitely be in the catchment.â
âDan, theyâre not even at primary school yet. Anyway, you know Sasha will insist on private school.â
âYeah, well, whatever. I just want you to see Iâm thinking long term about
