paper,ââ Michael said. âAbducted last night walking to her car.ââ
Claire frowned. âWhy would it be in the paper? I mean, they donât usually put stuff like that in the papers, right?ââ Because in Morganville, murder was sort of legitimate, wasnât it?
âThey do if it wasnât vampires,ââ Eve said, and nibbled on a carrot stick as she rolled the dice. âOooooh, pay me my two hundred, Mr. Banker. If sheâd been dragged off by vamps, even rogue vamps, it would have just been swept under the carpet like usual. Payoffs to the family, end of the story. But this is different.ââ
âIs that, you know, unusual? Crime? Crime that isnât vampire related, I mean?ââ
âKinda.ââ Eve shrugged. âBut people tend to get nasty around Morganville. Nasty, or drunk, or timid. One of those.ââ
âWhich are you?ââ Shane asked. Eve bared her teeth at him and growled. âOuch. Right. Gotcha.ââ
âSoâ¦Eve, I heard your brotherâs out of jail,ââ Michael said. Claire was rolling dice for her move, and by the time the plastic hit the board it sounded as loud as plates shattered on a tile floor. Nobody was making a sound. Nobody was breathing, so far as she could tell. From the expression on his face, Michael was clearly rethinking having brought up the subject, and Eve lookedâ¦hard and fierce and (deep down) scared.
Shane was just watching, no expression at all.
Awkward.
âUmâ¦ââ Claire cautiously slid her Scottie dog the six squares that sheâd rolled. âYou havenât said much about your brother.ââ She was curious what Eve would say. Because clearly Eve was not happy Michael had brought it up.
âI donât talk about him,ââ Eve said flatly. âNot anymore. His name is Jason, and heâs a dick, and letâs drop the subject, okay?ââ
âOkay.ââ Claire cleared her throat. âShane?ââ
âWhat?ââ He looked down at the board where she was pointing. âOh. Right. Three hundred.ââ
She mutely handed over her last bills as Shane took the dice in hand.
âEve, you know what he went to jail for. You donât thinkâ,ââ Michael began, very slowly.
âShut up, Michael,ââ Eve said tensely. âJust shut up, okay? Is it possible he did it? Sure. I wouldnât put it past him, but he just got out yesterday morning. Thatâs pretty fast work, even for Jason.ââ But she looked shaken, under the fierce expression, and even paler than normal. âYou know what? I have to get up early. âNight.ââ
âEveâââ
She jumped up and headed for the stairs. Michael followed, two steps behind as she climbed toward her room, black tattered-silk skirt fluttering. Claire watched them go, eyebrows raised, and Shane continued to shake the dice.
âGuess the gameâs over,ââ he said, and rolled anyway. âHeh. Boardwalk. I think that completes Shaneâs real estate empire, thank you for playing, good night.ââ
âWhat was Michael talking about?ââ Claire asked. âDoes he think Eveâs brother might have taken that girl?ââ
âNo, he thinks Eveâs brother might have killed that girl,ââ Shane said. âAnd the cops probably think so, too. If he did, theyâll get him, and this time, he wonât be getting out of jail. In fact, he probably wonât even make it to jail. One of Karlaâs brothers is a cop.ââ
âOh,ââ Claire said in a small voice. She could hear the murmur of conversation upstairs. âWellâ¦I guess I should get to bed, too. I have early classes tomorrow.ââ
Shane met her eyes. âMight want to give them some privacy for a while.ââ
Oh. Right. She
