frowned. âHow do you know this?â
Sally sat back and nodded gravely. âI have my sources.â
âI donât believe it,â Watch said. âBryce Poole doesnât even know what the Secret Path is. I asked him about it once and he didnât even know where it began.â
âHe was just acting like he didnât know,â Sally said. âAfter I told him about our adventures on the other side of it, he told me he didnât think you were equipped enough to survive the dangers of the interdimensional portal.â
It was Watchâs turn to frown. âEquipped with what?â
âI donât want to get personal here,â Sally said.
âYou are always personal,â Adam said dryly.
Sally was offended. âDonât take it out on me because Cindy is suddenly interested in another guy.â
âI didnât say I was interested,â Cindy said.
âYour voice said it all,â Sally corrected. âAnd I understand what Adamâs going through. Iâm sympathetic. To experience raging jealously and bitter rejection for the first time is not easy.â
Adam sighed. âI am so grateful for your sympathy.â
âWeâre arguing about nothing,â Watch said. âBryce isnât a super hero. Heâs probably not ever used the Secret Path.â
âHow do you know?â Sally shot back. âYouâve been afraid to use it since that first time.â
âI havenât been afraid,â Watch said. âIâve just been busy with other things.â
âYeah, like saving the planet with me, his best friend,â Adam added.
âI saved the planet, too,â Sally said.
âThen you and Bryce should be perfect together,â Adam said.
Sally laughed. âYou are so jealous!â
Adam got angry. âWhy should I be jealous of a guy who thinks heâs James Bond? I agree with Watch. This guy has not been on the Secret Path. He doesnât have the guts.â
Sally stood. âWhy donât we go see?â
âGo where?â Cindy asked. âSee what? What is the Secret Path?â
âIt winds through town and leads to other dimensions,â Watch explained.
âIt starts or ends in the cemetery,â Sally added. âDepending on how you look at it. Why donât we gothere and look for signs of Bryce? Then we can see who the real hero in this town is.â
âWhy would Bryce leave signs that heâs been using the Secret Path?â Watch asked.
âYeah,â Adam said. âWho is he trying to impress?â
âYou guys have an answer for everything.â Sally snickered and turned for the door. âAre you chickens coming or not?â
The way she worded the question, it was impossible to say no.

A t the cemetery they had no trouble finding Madeline Templetonâs tombstone. It was larger than all the other stones, and it had a large black raven carved on the top. The bird glared down at them and Adam was reminded of the last time they had taken the path, and the horror they had experienced. He shuddered as he glanced around the cemetery. The place was dismal. The few naked trees stood like angry skeletons. A shadow seemed to hang across the dry grounds, although there wasnât a cloud in the sky.
âDid you put this here?â Watch asked Sally as he knelt by Madeline Templetonâs tombstone. He held up a green knapsack. Sally took a step forward and shook her head.
âNo,â she said. âWhy would I put anything here? It probably belongs to Bryce.â
âHow convenient,â Adam said.
Sally ignored him. âWhat is inside it?â she asked.
Watch opened the sack. âBinoculars. A thermos of water. A compass. A few flares.â He held up a hunting knife. âIt looks as if Bryce was anticipating trouble.â
âBut why would he leave his equipment here?â Cindy asked.
âI donât
