pressuring me to do the wrong thing; and last, that I am very sorry for breaking the rules. Unfortunately, my mouth has other plans. âI donât see why youâre making such a big deal about this, Lisa. It was just a bucket of fish.â
âIt was not just a bucket of fish. The rules exist for a reason.â
âJust think of me as an exception to the rulesâlike you think of Mitch.â
Lisa scowls, but doesnât respond.
âTell me, Lisa,â Judy says, âwill Kendraâs behavior derail your plans to Free Willy ?â
My bravado evaporates instantly. It never occurred to me that sliding Maurice an extra snack could ruin his chance at freedom. âWhy would that matter?â
âYou gave him the wrong mix,â Lisa says. âIf he gets sick, we canât release him.â
Judyâs head twitches toward Chili, but he is too riveted by Lisa to notice. At least, he is until Mitch nudges him helpfully. âJudy wants you to get a shot of Kendraâs expression,â he says. âShe looks like sheâs going to faint.â
âShut up, Mitch,â I say. How can he make fun of me when thereâs so much at stake for Maurice? âDo you think heâll be okay, Lisa?â
She pauses long enough to make sure I really get the point before letting me off the hook. âProbably.â
Iâm so relieved that it takes me a while to tune in to the lecture again.
âI wonât tolerate your recklessness,â Lisa is saying. âIâm sure you get away with acting like a spoiled child in New York, but around here, the animals are the priority.â
âMaurice is a priority for me, too,â I tell her.
âIf you want a pet, get a goldfish. The rest of us are here to study, and youâre disrupting our work. Since you canât be trusted, I donât want you here unless youâre supervised.â
I gesture at the crew. âIâm supervised constantly.â
Lisa turns to Mitch. âYour family brought her in here, you keep an eye on her.â
Judy jumps in before Mitch can protest. âGood idea. Mitch is used to babysitting.â
Black Sheep Rule Number Six: It isnât murder when youâre doing the world a favor .
Carrie rolls her eyes as Mitch stalks ahead of us up the street. âI know Mona asked him to chaperone tonight, but itâs not like sheâs around to know whether he actually does.â
âHe would know,â I say, projecting my voice. âPerfect, responsible, exceptional Mitch would never ignore a commitment.â
Mitch speeds up until heâs nearly out of sight. Not that I care. I couldnât be happier that he refused to walk with us. Since the crew went ahead to set up, Carrie and I have a rare opportunity to chat privately. Weâve already managed to share stories from our past, and our hopes and dreams for the future. Finally, I have the chance to ask the question thatâs been on my mind for days: âDo you think that hot guy from the mall will be at the party?â
âJordan? Absolutely. Heâs Aaronâs best friend.â
We turn down Aaronâs street and Iâm suddenly wracked with insecurity about my hair, my makeup, my outfit, and my personalityâor lack thereof.
âYouâll be fine,â Carrie reassures me. âThat skirt and tank top are all you need. Itâs casual and sexy all rolled into one.â
At the end of the driveway, we hear someone shout, âTheyâre here,â and the bright lights of several cameras flick on. Although Iâve become more accustomed to being in the spotlight lately, itâs still intimidating. I stop in the middle of the road and rummage through my purse.
âQuit stalling,â Carrie says. âYouâre practically the guest of honor.â
âPlease.â
âIâm serious,â she says. âYouâre famous around this town. Iâve had
