Linnie Bialek.â
âOh goody!â The little lady clapped her hands. âIâm always so thrilled to meet my fellow bakers.â
âIâll say!â The man clasped Amyâs hand and gave it a hearty shake. âPleased to meet you. Iâm Ty Tottenham and this is my wife, Tai.â
Chapter 8
L innie saw Amyâs smile flicker as Ty and Tai introduced themselves. The change in expression was so fast, anyone else would have missed it, but Linnie caught the nanosecond of pure panic in her sisterâs eyes.
âTy and Tai,â Amy echoed. âYou donât say.â
âI know, crazy, right? Obviously we were meant to be.â Tai craned her neck to give her husband a quick buss on the cheek, then said, âHope weâll see you gals around. What room are you staying in, anyway? Maybe weâre neighbors.â
âWeâre in a suite up in the South Tower.â Amy glanced down at the digits scrawled on the paper jacket for her key card. âRoom two-six-two-eight. Ow!â She yelped as Linnie threw a swift elbow jab to her rib cage.
âLovely to meet you both. We have to go.â Linnie strode across the lobby and onto the elevator without a backward glance.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you? You are so rude .â Amy caught the elevator doors just as they were closing and forced them back open. She rubbed her side and winced. âOw. I think you broke my clavicle.â
âYour clavicleâs your collarbone,â Linnie said. âI hit your asternal ribs. And how could you be so stupid as to tell them our suite number? I canât believe youâd give them ammunition like that. Now weâll have to change rooms.â
âWe got the last room in the entire hotel,â Amy reminded her. âWe canât change. Not that thereâs any reason to.â
âDonât be so sure about that.â Linnie jammed her key card into the ârestricted floorsâ slot and punched in twenty-six. âI know sharks when I see them.â
Amy burst out laughing. âSharks in L.L.Bean corduroys and Nikes? They were just being friendly, for heavenâs sake. Theyâre from Ohio !â
âDonât fall for that wide-eyed, aw-shucks facade. What they just pulled in the lobby is a classic two-person pickpocket maneuver: the sandwich.â Linnie narrowed her eyes. âThe woman bumped me and tried to distract me with her apologies and inquiries about things that are none of her business while her partner started to ransack my coat and bags. Sheâs the stall; heâs the pick. I see it all the time on the casino floor.â
Amy made a big show of peering into her purse. âOh, thank heavens, my walletâs still here. Whew, that was a close one.â
âHow can you be this gullible?â Linnie tapped her foot as the elevator zoomed up. âThey donât want our wallets. They want our baking intel!â
âDo you have any idea how insane you sound right now?â
âWho spent five years on the Junior Science Olympiad circuit, you or me? People who spend their lives training for intense competitions donât see the world like you do. They get desperate and irrational. They get vicious.â Linnie had to avert her gaze as she finished with, âThey stoop to things they never imagined theyâd be capable of.â
Amy said nothing, so Linnie kept going. âIâve met dozens of Ty and Tais. Keep your mouth shut and your guard up or youâll be sorry. Trust me.â
At this, Amy grinned. âWhatever would I do without you to protect me from the cold, cruel world?â
âYouâd be an appetizer at the Delicious Duet feeding frenzy, thatâs what,â Linnie shot back. âFrom now on, youâre forbidden to talk to any contestants unless Iâm standing right there to supervise. Thatâs right, I said forbidden .â
âSo youâre
