as I knew, they weren't an item.

“Why on earth were you out there to begin with, Tabitha?” My dad bit out, his face reddened. He struggled with high-blood pressure, a fact that was glaringly obvious by the color of his skin. It wasn't healthy for him to get that upset.

“Calm down, Dad,” I choked out. “I just needed some air. It's not like I was making a break for it or  anything.”

Kellan still hadn't answered my question, not directly. I couldn't turn around to face him, and I hated it. I wanted to see his face as I interrogated him. “Answer me, Kellan. Am I going to die from the bite?”

His large body shook underneath mine. At first, I was a little worried, but I didn't need to be. He was chuckling at my question, which only infuriated me. I didn't see anything funny about it.

“No, you're not going to die. You weren't attacked by a zombie, but you were attacked by a vampire.”

My startled eyes flew up to the others. Their serious expressions only confirmed the truth of his words. “No,” I denied hoarsely. “Vampires aren't real.”

“Like zombies aren't real?” Kellan chuckled again, but this time it was without amusement. “Sweetheart, I hate to tell you this, but monsters are real.”

Using my hand, I tentatively touched my neck. Someone had bandaged it. “I gave you a B12 shot and one for the pain, too,” Kellan added, noticing my movements. “You're going to hurt like hell for the next few days, but you'll be okay.”

“Did you kill him?” I asked. I was angry over what had happened, but I was also afraid. What if it he came back? We weren't equipped to take him on, I doubted anybody could ever be.

“No,” Kellan muttered harshly. “But that might change. Right now, he's in the shower.”

I struggled to my feet. The world spun, but I didn't pass out. Breathing slowly, I regained enough control to turn around and face him. He stared up at me, his blue eyes unconcerned. It made me angrier. “He nearly killed me, but you let him in? What's wrong with you? You've put us all at risk.”

I turned to look at my mom. “We need to leave. You don't know how fast he is. He could take us all out, and we wouldn't even know it was happening.”

Kellan scoffed at my words. “Calm down, Tabitha. Drake was starved. It doesn't make it okay, but he was caught up in the blood thirst. It won't happen again.”

“You know his name?” I hissed, ignoring the pain. “And how do you know it won't happen again? Are you volunteering yourself to be his donor?” I looked at the sides of his throat before continuing, “Funny, I don't see any puncture marks. It's easy to sit there and scoff, when you haven't experienced it for yourself. Let him rip into your throat, then you tell me to calm down.”

Kellan's eyes flared with anger. He came to his feet so fast, the chair fell over. “Don't talk to me about pain, little girl. You don't have a clue as to what it really is. A little mud in the swamp and a vampire bite are nothing, believe me. There are things that are far worse, and for your sake, you better hope you never have to find out what they are.”

His voice was bitter at the end. There was something in his eyes and voice that made me believe he knew what he was talking about. Turning around, he quickly pulled the chair back up. When he faced us again, he was back in control. “Drake is safe, I vow it. You'll just have to take my word for it because I'm done explaining. My house, my rules. If you don't like it, you're welcome to leave.”

One of these days, I was going to call Kellan out on that, but it wasn't the time or place. I felt too ill to walk up the stairs, much less to take him on. The day was coming when I would call his bluff, though, and I'd be prepared when I did.

My legs trembled underneath me. Kellan stalked away, so I took the chair we'd been in. Sitting down carefully, I breathed out a sigh of
