to get all this in the press? Who blabbed?â
Dani explained the situation. The three women were outraged that some jerk had taken advantage of Bailey.
âTell Walker,â Elissa said fiercely. âHeâll make the guy pay.â
Dani was intrigued by the seemingly gentle Elissa being so willing to attack. Although it made sense. Walker was a warrior at heartâhe would need a woman who was emotionally strong and secure within herself.
âApparently Alex already did that,â Dani said. âThe senatorâs eldest son, a card-carrying member of the Washington State bar, punched a reporter.â
Lori winced. âThat canât be good.â
âHe said he didnât know what was going to happen. It depends on whether or not the reporter presses charges.â Dani had a bad feeling he would. All the more attention on the event. Although the downside for the reporter was that he would come off as a jerk. Would he care about that?
Penny eyed Dani. âSo the cool, conservative lawyer has a passionate side.â
Dani had thought the same thing, but she wasnât going to get into that with her sister-in-law. Not right now. âEnough about me,â she said firmly. âWeâre here to plan a wedding.â She turned to Elissa. âWhere do we stand?â
Elissa drew in a breath. âItâs going to be a big, splashy affair. I canât help itâthatâs what Iâve always wanted. A fairy-tale wedding with lots of flowers and twinkle lights. I want a dress with a big skirt and my hair up.â
Dani felt a twinge of envy. Elissa was happy, in love and getting married. Not that Dani felt any burning need to be married this second, but she would like to fall in love with a great guy.
Not going to happen anytime soon, she reminded herself. In the past year sheâd been left by her husband, who claimed she hadnât grown enough in their marriageâa total sham to cover up his cheating. Sheâd fallen for and been seduced by a seemingly perfect man who turned out to be married. Last but certainly not least, sheâd met a kind, quiet guy who had only recently left the priesthood. It was a challenge she hadnât been willing to take on.
Her love life had become a cautionary tale.
âYou should absolutely have the wedding you want,â Lori said firmly. âFluffy dress and all.â
âI agree,â Penny said with a sniff. âEven if youâre not concerned about the food.â
Dani groaned. âDonât go there,â she told Penny. âItâs Elissaâs choice.â
Elissa shifted to the edge of the sofa and touched Pennyâs shoulder. âIâm sorry,â she said quietly. âI should have talked to you about this before. I donât want you catering the wedding.â
Pennyâs eyes darkened. âYes, I know. Thatâs been made very clear.â
Elissa continued as if Penny hadnât said anything. âIt was a tough decision for me. I know youâre the best chef I could ever hope to find, but youâre going to be my sister-in-law. What kind of sister would I be if I made you work on my wedding? I want you to enjoy yourself. I refuse to be selfish. Our guests will simply have to understand.â
Penny shrugged. âItâs your call.â
âI would love for you to cater the rehearsal dinner, if that isnât too much trouble. I know itâs still work for you, but weâre talking maybe fifteen or twenty people. Thatâs nothing for you.â
âTrue,â Penny said slowly. âI guess that would work. I could give you some names for the wedding. I know a few people who wonât screw things up.â
Elissa smiled. âI would really appreciate that.â
Dani leaned toward Lori. âImpressive. Penny could have held a grudge for years.â
Lori lowered her voice. âPenny and Reid already had this out a while ago.
