something?
She leaned back in the booth. âOkay, this is all crazy and happening way too fast. Letâs start at the beginning. Some sleazebucket coerced Bailey into telling him about me. So the press knows and the story is out. What now?â
âNow we deal. Youâre going to be hounded by the press, at least for a while.â
Sheâd been afraid that was what he was going to say. âCan we define both âhoundedâ and âa whileâ? Are we talking days, weeks or do I need to move to Borneo?â
âMoving isnât required, but it could take a while for the story to die down. Do you live in a house?â
She nodded. âA rental. Nothing flashy.â
âItâs not going to offer enough protection. You might want to think about staying with a friend until all this is over. Preferably one who lives in a secure building.â
She didnât know anyone who fit that description. âI hate the thought of being forced to leave my home because of a story in the paper.â
His gaze was steady. âThereâs having principles and thereâs reality. The press can make your life hell, at least in the short term.â
âAnd Iâm not even Paris Hilton.â
âWho?â
She laughed. âYouâre such a guy.â
âGood thing. Otherwise, Iâd be in the paper.â
âAn interesting headline. Senatorâs Oldest Son Secretly a Woman. That would be a complication.â
His gaze dropped to her mouth. âIn more ways than one.â
Was it her or had it just gotten hot in here? She shifted on her seat.
âIâm sorry,â she said. âI never meant to make a mess of everything. I didnât want to hurt anyone. I just wanted to find my father.â
He reached across the table and took her hand. âThis isnât your fault. You didnât do anything wrong.â
His fingers were warm. She was sure he meant his touch to be comforting, so she couldnât blame him if she wanted to stretch and purr and have him stroke her all over.
âSo you donât hate me anymore?â she asked.
âI never hated you.â
âYou came really close. There was a little hate in your heart.â
âI didnât trust you. Thereâs a difference.â
âAnd now?â
âNow I think youâre who you say you are.â
âWhat changed your mind? My sparkling personality?â
He released her hand. One corner of his mouth turned up. âWhat else could it be?â
Before she could answer, she caught sight of her watch and groaned. âIâm late,â she said. She tossed five dollars on the table as she slid out of the booth. âThanks for coming to talk to me.â
He picked up the money and tucked it into her jacket pocket. âIâm always up for a good rescue.â
Â
D ANI OPENED Pennyâs front door without knocking and burst into the house.
âIâm late, I know,â she said. âIâm sorry.â
Penny stood and hugged her. âWhat happened? We were getting worried.â
The âweâ in question was Penny; Lori, Reidâs significant other; and Elissa, Walkerâs fiancée.
âI have the best excuse ever,â Dani said as she handed Penny the newspaper sheâd brought with her. âI was chased by the press. I had to call Alex and tell him what was going on. Apparently Iâm a story.â
Penny scanned the headline, then held out the paper so Lori and Elissa could see what it said.
âIt could be worse,â Lori told her. âYou could have been abducted by aliens.â
âGood point,â Elissa teased. âNo one wants all that anal probing.â
Dani laughed, then shrugged out of her coat and collapsed on the sofa next to Elissa. âYouâve managed to put my life in perspective. Thank you.â
Penny sank onto the floor and pulled out a notepad. âSo what happened
