donât want a little muffin?â she asked me at breakfast. They were giving each passenger two little Solu muffins each.
âI know it works fast, but I donât think itâll help me lose weight between now and ten a.m!â I said.
âYou never know!â she said with a grin.
Itâs nice to see her so happy.
I wave off the muffins. Really, Iâm just not into it.
I do have about ten packets of Solu squirreled away in an unused airsickness baggie.
(Just in case I overcome my morals and have the chance to sell them in Cozumel.)
I put them in the safe in our room. I didnât want Viv to see them. I think sheâs still a little mad that Iâm not taking them.
And it was fun to program the safe.
I made âBOOTSâ the code.
Theyâve made a treatment room in the (world-class) spa into a weigh-in center.
It reminds me of a fancy version of Weight Watchers. (Viv made me go with her for two months in seventh grade.)
The same scale from the gangplank is set up here.
âGood morning!â A sixty-something woman with maroon-colored hair greets us. (Hello, Clairol.) âHow are yâall feeling today?â
âI feel fantastic!â Viv gushes. âIâm so happy!â
âThatâs what we like to hear!â
Maroon-Hair Lady swipes Vivikaâs ID card and then motions for Viv to step onto the scale.
âOh my goodness. Can you step off and step on again, dear?â
Viv darts a questioning look at me, steps off the scale and back on.
âHun, you have lost thirteen pounds!â the lady says.
Vivâs mouth drops open.
âOh my God!!!â she squeals. She pulls me into a crushing hug.
âThirteen pounds! I canât believe it!â
Maroon-Hair Lady beams. âHun, body-percentage wiseâthis is one of the biggest losses weâve seen!â
Viv is hugging herself, jumping up and down.
âBefore I came on board I thought, âIf I lose five pounds, Iâll be happy!â Thirteen pounds! I have to call my dad!â
âNow, I have to ask youâhave you been eating more than the recommended three to five servings a day?â
Viv looks at me.
Of course she has.
She has two Solu pastries at breakfast, a Solu dessert at both lunch and dinner and they give us two packets at every meal and thereâs that chocolate on our pillows at night.
âMaybe,â Viv says. âIâm not sure.â
âWell, you know, this is an exciting loss, but I think youâre going to want to restrain yourself now. Three to five servings is right for a young woman like yourself. Iâd play it safe.â
Viv is nodding, nodding, agreeing.
Iâm going to have to remind her of what the lady is saying. I can tell Viv is hardly listening.
âOkay, sweetie,â the lady says to me. âWhy donât you step up here and letâs see what Soluâs done for you!â
I step on.
(Cue a comic wah-wah-wah.)
âWell now, huh,â she says. âIt must be the boots. Remove your shoes, honey.â
âBut I was wearing them when I got weighed the first time,â I point out.
âIs that right?â The lady looks bereaved. âWell, Iâm stumped. This is not at all what I expected.â
She looks at me, like sheâs a doctor giving news of a fatal illness. âSweet girl, you have lost seven ounces so far.â
âThatâs what I expected,â I say, but she rushes on.
âTell me about your experience with Solu. Have you been taking the recommended dosage?â
âMy friend was really seasick,â Viv butts in. âAnd she hasnât been able to take her doses yet. But sheâs feeling better, right, Laurel?â
âI guess soââ
âOh! Thatâs a relief!â Maroon-Hair Lady gushes. âI havenât had anyone fail yet this morning. I donât want you to be the first one.â
Fail? That seems a little
