possible,â she said when she turned back to the group. âEm-Lin herself might possess the full knowledge, and she prolongs the fantasy that Or-Lin has survived by claiming to channel the knowledge from her.â
Vance shook his head. âIâve spent time with Em-Lin,â he said. âIf the dead sister is nothing but a fantasy, she must be one hell of a fantasy.â
âI tend to agree,â said Lense. âThere might be something at work here that isnât under Em-Linâs control.â
âThen whose control is it under?â said Fabian.
âIts own, maybe,â said Lense. âInstead of a vivid fantasy or memory construct, it could be similar to the Vulcan katra passed on before deathâa copy of a personâs consciousness imprinted on a hostâs brain. Em-Lin might be dealing with a lingering remnant of Or-Linâs mind, one with access to all of Or-Linâs specialized knowledge and skills.â
âIn which case, Em-Linâs making her offer in good faith,â said Gomez. âThe dead sisterâs consciousness really would be helping her work on the transmitter.â
âHow wonderful,â said Soloman. âTo have a departed companion continue to guide you after death.â
Although Vance knew that Soloman would have loved to still hear the thoughts of his deceased bond-mate 111âhe had gone to extreme lengths just to talk to an alternate-universe version of her not too long agoâhe knew there was no joy in this. âI bet Em-Lin wouldnât agree, and that worries me. As badly shaken up as Em-Lin has been, I donât think Or-Linâs been treating her very well lately.â
âThat suggests another possibility to explain Or-Linâs influence,â said Lense. âWhat if Or-Lin is a katra or a fantasy or some other kind of echo of consciousness, and sheâs been twisted by the effects of the Dominion transmitter? Who knows what her real intentions might be?â
âSounds like just the kind of ghost we donât want anywhere near that transmitter,â said Fabian.
âOr-Linâs presence has definitely gotten stronger since we came down here.â Vance looked up at the huge yellow-tinted tank as it continued to turn, the protoplasmic clumps melding and dividing and spinning in the fluid inside it. âEm-Lin went from zoning out periodically to zoning out all the time. After a while, I had a hell of a time just getting through to her. Even then, I had to talk to Or-Lin first.â
âShe didnât answer you, did she?â said Fabian.
âNot directly,â said Vance.
âThat you know of,â said Soloman. âWhat if Or-Lin has taken over?â
Vance looked across the chamber at Em-Lin, and he felt uneasy. âI hadnât thought of that.â
âAll right,â said Gomez, raising her voice just enough to command her teammatesâ full attention. âWe could speculate all day about this, but people are dying every minute we stand here and talk. The bottom line is, do we need Em-Linâs help?â
âAs I said earlier, this system is far more robust than the Dominion systems we encountered in the shrine.â A flicker of annoyance crossed Solomanâs features. âI have attempted to apply a variation of the morphic virus that I used on the booby traps, but without success.â
âThis is some kind of hyper-changeling tech down here,â said Fabian. âItâs so good at staying a step ahead of us, Iâve been wondering if it can see the future.â
âIâll take that as a âyes,â â said Gomez. âWe need her. Letâs take her up on her offer.â
âAnd hope the dead sister isnât thinking some dead Starfleeters might be fun to hang around with,â said Fabian.
âWeâll watch her carefully,â said Gomez.
âI do not know if we could tell if she does anything
